When I was a kid, my Uncle and my Dad took me to the prison rodeo I think three years running at Big Mac, the McAlester State Pen in SE Oklahoma. I've always liked our hometown rodeo, but the prison rodeo was a whole different animal. They had an event called 'Money the hard way', where they'd have about fifty inmates in the arena and they'd turn a brahma bull loose with a hundred dollar bill in a tobacco sack tied to one of its horns. Whoever got the hundred dollar bill got to keep it. Believe me, it was mayhem.
they weren't wearing no balloons around them either.


The whole scene was bizarre. They lady inmates were hilarious, they wolf whistled and cheered and booed louder than the rest of the crowd. And the prison rodeo band was top notch too. They played at our hometown rodeo every year too. Hell I remember Reba signing the national anthem at the Poteau rodeo.

Anyway, sorry for the Thump story but it jogged a big memory.

Same here, Postie....I've seen two of those prison rodeos....once, here at the MS State Pen. in Parchman, MS, which they discontinued because of injuries and security reasons....the other, down at the Angola, LA prison....at Angola it is called "Guts & Glory", and they tie a poker chip to the bull's head....that sheeit is brutal down here.

The rodeo has gotten so popular at Angola that they have a big spring 2 day event in April, then fall events, every weekend in October....in addition to the rodeo, it's almost like a state fair, with tons of food booths, arts/crafts, bands, etc....you wouldn't believe some of the jewelry and leather crafts those inmates make !!!
