I just read an article about the 17 yr cicadas emerging this year out your way. Its supposed to be quite a spectacular event. I've seen them emerge like. that in Missouri and its biblical if you've never seen them.
You seen anything about it?

They came out here in 2010...I thought someone was running a pump motor down on the river they were so loud!.....thumb size holes in the ground everywhere. I got some pictures of them somewhere.

Here too. It was several years ago fishing the Saluda river and the noise was so loud you could not hardly talk in the boat.
We actually have them every year, however every once in a while they will come out by the zillions

Isn't there a 7, a 10, and a 17 year variety?

Looks like this one is a 17 year one. The hatch I saw in Missouri was a 17 and 13 that hatched at the same time.

The ground was literally like a crawling carpet of them.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to it. That many of anything is kinda creepy.
