View Full Version : Favorite Outdoor thing?

Since we all know Cap'n would rather Turkey hunt than just about anything; I wonder what everyone's favortie thing to do outdoors is? Other than BBP shagging the missus for outdoor boinking day.

I wonder how many we'd be able to guess of each other?

I love all the stuff I do outdoors and they're all different and I like them for different reasons. But... if you were told you could only do ONE outdoor activity the rest of your life, what would it be?

Fish.

I'll need you to be more specific, sir. Catfishing on the big muddy?

Fish.

Bwahahaha....the rumor is that if you paid your losing fishing bets, you couldn't afford to fish. ;)

Improve wildlife habitat including planting food plots, controlled burns and tower stand building.
Hunting anything would be next and fishing after that.

Duck hunt. Then deer, then boating. I did get out to fish for the first time in a very long time this weekend and it's got that itch starting again for me.

Obviously outdoor noticing is not on anyone's list.

It's a bit chillier. I had to put on a windbreaker to walk to my car at the airport. The trip was a nice break but I couldn't take that year around.

I was gonna say pina coladas and getting caught in the rain, but it sounded too cliche.

Going after anything with feathers, fins, or fur. ;)

I would have to agree with Big Muddy but would probably change the order to fur, feathers, or fins.

Hunting critters with horns (OK, I know it's antlers, in most cases anyway, so sue me) for some reason really seems to drive me. That being said, I probably get the most enjoyment, and occasionally frustration too, from assisting a child or newbie to get their first deer, turkey, etc. I LOVE seeing them light-up like a kid on Christmas morning when they succeed.

And then there is watching a good hunting dog in action, and ...

Can I change mine?

Skinny dipping with a friend of the split tail variety has always been one of my favoritest outdoor activities.

its just now I have to do it at night.

I've been pondering this question and haven't really come up with an answer yet. I really do consider myself a man of all seasons and enjoy being outdoors in all of them and my outdoor activities change accordingly. (I've lived in places with only two season like wet and dry or hot and hotter and that may be part of the reason.)

25 years ago I would have said camping. 20 years ago I would have said deer hunting. Now I'd have to say definitely fishing. And I'd have to say I have YOU effers to thank for reigniting that love for me, truthfully. So thanks!

Camping. Hands down.
And I'm breaking the rules, but camping has and does include either hunting or fishing. And cooking! And drinking!

Diving

I'm glad you mentioned diving. Its also one of my favorite outdoor activities. As I've gotten older (63 this year) I've found that almost all of my physical fitness goals have been related o prolonging my diving years. Sadly, I am already usually the senior person on most dive boats. And that's a bummer. I'm nowhere near ready to stop or alter how I dive.

BBP, we need to hook up some time and share stories and experiences. Our retirement is being planned mostly around diving! I was trying to stay on track in the thread, but I believe that single activity is going to align with other outdoors preferences, particularly fishing and biking. I think diving can be done well into advanced ages...

You need to show up at our next fishing extravaganza and we can swap stories!
Where is your next dive? Ours is Placencia, Belize in June.

Thumper eating at an outdoor buffet would not be an activity, it would be an event worthy of selling tickets to watch.

Unsure, but my wife is getting antsy for a trip - probably Bonaire as that's (so far) where we're also planning on spending part of our retirement. But first, we have a 20th anniversary trip to Italy coming up in May/June - still trying to work out timing with my new job. We're going to get Lionfish certified on our next diving trip, for sure - that is part of what I envision spending my retirement days doing. Are plans coming together for the next fishing extravaganza?

Seems like lionfish are everywhere in the Caribbean these days. Are you seeing them in Bonaire? The past three years we've visited St Lucia twice and Antigua once. We probably killed 6-10 lionfish per dive. I even spoke once to the dm about spending more time looking for other critters and less time hunting frigging lionfish. Both places have egular lionfish tournaments now and are encouraging local restaurants to put them on the menu. What a mess that whole thing is though, to use an Orangeism.

I loved Bonaire and its double reefs. What a place to retire! Do you have a favorite outfitter there? Have you dived Oil Slick Leap? My dive buddy and I did giant strides off the cliff and only used the ladder for our exit. It was so cool to back our pickup right up to the ledge almost and sit on the tailgate and gear up. My wife wasn't so fond of the beaches. What food too! A place called Cactus Blue stands out as an awesome one although I think it was some kind of drink they served that makes it stand out more to me.

STOP IT!!! You guys are stirring up my travel jones! Dang it, now I'm gonna be exploring ol' Al Gore's internet to see what sort of adventures are lurking out there. I wish I were rich ... I think I'd reserve a permanent cabin with a nice cruise line and see if I could talk them into a "hop-on, hop-off" option! ;)

I'm looking at an Asian excursion the beginning of next year ... Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, N. & S. Vietnam and China. But that's a dang year from now! I need a filler for this year 'cause I just don't think I can wait that long between trips. Thanks for nuttin' ... I foresee my eBay account getting drained soon. :(
