Yesterday, was my last chance to bag a turkey, this year....season closes Monday....I left the house at 3:30 am, and was sitting on my turkey stand at 5:30 am....sat under my big oak tree until 10:30 am....never heard the first gobble, but did see several jakes and hens, feeding in the area.

I took the landowner out for lunch, then returned to my oak tree at 2:30 pm....finally, at 5 pm, I coaxed a gobble outta this young bird, and he came in with 2 hens and a jake....normally, I wouldn't have shot this young bird, but since it was my last available day to hunt, I went for it, and put some meat in the freezer.

My turkeys aren't as photogenic, as Cap's. ;)

Hey, Cap, how much do the birds in your area weigh???

Captain

20 pounds or so. Every once in a while you will hear of a bird heavier but they are rare.

Yep, this one was a little over 18 pounds....he sure did make some beautiful tasty-looking breast meat....I'm gonna boil down the thighs and legs 'til the meat falls off the bone, chop it up real good, and make some turkey salad, using mayo, diced homemade sweet pickles, red onion, and boiled egg....gonna cut the breast into chunky nuggets, and deep-fry them.

I'm not a real fan of roasted wild turkey breast. Kinda dry and doesn't taste good to me. Now throw it on a smoker and its larrupin. I came upon a freshly dead turkey by the the side of the road once at deer camp, shot out the window probably by some reprobate. We smoked it all afternoon on an old weber and it was awesome.

I'm with you Cappy. I'd just pull the breasts ... the rest was dog food.

I suppose.. with a little encouragement - and a few jigs, lures, rifle shells or dollars sent my way.. I could post my (original) "HideHunter's Wild Turkey and Wild Rice Soup" recipe.. You guys that aren't keeping legs and thighs are missing out. I also make a stroganoff with them.. Never had anyone turn them down.

Son's bird..

I like to cook turkey breast exactly like I'm cooking a pot roast but I use chicken stock to cook it in. Thicken the gravy and serve it over mashed taters with some carrots on the side. Couple of brown and serve rolls make it even better.

I throw enough of them to feed a small army every year.

I hunted with a guy whose family owns a turkey call company in the Ozarks. As a group they were tossing roughly 60 sets a year. I fixed soup for him and his folks.. No more. ;)
