I used to be a big duck/goose hunter but due to losing access to a lot of properties and work and kid responsibilities I hadn't bee n duck hunting for probably 15 years.

I had a co-worker ask me to go yesterday and we went to one of the old places I used to hunt. It is a very small waterhole in the middle of a field. It is small enough that you could shoot all the way across it. There is a few small trees and some scrub brush surrounding it along with some tall grasses.

We got out there and tossed out just a few decoys. The ducks started flying in even before it was light enough to shoot. Once it got light enough to start shooting, it was very obvious that it had been a looong time since I'd tried to shoot flying ducks.

The shooting improved and the ducks were thick. We ended up shooting our limit of Woodies in less than an hour and a half.

It really gave me the itch back. I'd forgotten how much I liked that kind of hunting.

In my opinion, woodies are the most beautiful and best-tasting duck there is.....I bet even Sky and Tpost would enjoy some smoked woodie breasts. ;)

I will agree that they are the most beautiful ducks in the U.S. Coloring me green with envy as we get very few wood ducks out here.

Makes me want to go duck hunting! Woodies are indeed beautiful and I love the sounds they make too. As for eating them, I really don’t have much taste for ducks of any kind. I’ve always heard that woodies woodies were the best eating though among the liver lovers.

When you going back?

Our season opens on the 11th. I’m headed to the coast on the 10th to Fish and hunt openin day.
Those wood ducks are sure colorful. I bought a new tract of land to hunt on and there is a lake there and two beaver swamps. Each morning while hunting a boat load of those woodies come in the flooded timber. It’s very tempting.

Very cool Deputy. I am jealous of all of you. Ducks are rarities around my parts.

It sure does look like a lot of fun on TV though. :)

I'm going again the next chance I get. Hopefully on my days off next week.

Woodies are fast flying and look to be completely out of control the way they twist and rock when coming in to land.

We had some land before daylight and they were swimming under some low-hanging brush when they jumped and flew off right through the trees. I don't know how they manage to fly through some of the thick stuff they get through.

My favorite duck hunting spot was a tidal creek right in front of a huge beaver pond. During the early season the woodies (and a few teal) would flood into our set ups there. As a result, I've probably shot more wood ducks than any other species. I love hunting those things.

QA that's funny you said that. Hotshot posted on Facebook the night before the duck opener how excited he was to get out to hunt this year, Since he never comes around here anymore I had to bust his chops about the wadders on Facebook.

Shame we don't having Carnivore to kick around anymore. He was a walking source of entertainment.

Hope he don't wiretap my phone now.....

Grilled them up tonight. Marinated them in some Olive oil, Worcestershire, hot sauce, and garlic.
