My oldest grandson turned 7 today. Pa pa is considering his first pocket knife as a birthday present. Too soon, or not?

Tough one. My first instinct is "too early". But what do I know about kids? (other than how to make 'em!) ;)

These days, he'd prolly show up at school with it in his pocket and end up in Juvie!

I remember on my 11th birthday, my uncle gave me a 3-place gun rack. In the card, he wrote: "Next year, you'll get something to hang on this thing!"

Dang! That was one of the longest years of my life!

Nah. Just let momma and daddy hang on to it

Too soon. I wouldn't get him one as a gift right now because it kinda sucks to have a gift and not get to take it home. But, what I would do is get him one that you take when him and PaPa go out on the guys trips. Pull it out when you take him fishing or are out in the yard. That gives you a little time to make sure he's safe and teach him not to close it on his fingers, or cut back towards his hand etc.... He'll think its cool and it will build memories why giving him and papa something special / letting him learn.

Too soon in my opinion. I got one when I was just about that age. One of the first things I did was test it to see how sharp it was. I cut the strap on my older sister’s brand new leather purse.
Come to think of it, I’m not sure I ever saw that knife again.

I think I got mine right around cub scout time when one of the badges was knife safety.

That’s what got me to thinking about it. I think he’ll be covering that in scouts this coming year.

This would be a definite possible maybe.

Welp... if someone is gonna put him there, Grandpa is a fine choice.

I think he ought to have one.
Or a belt knife for him to wear on his side when he and granddaddy are fishing.

You know I actually thought of a leatherman and that’s the exact picture I had in my brain.

I’d get it for him, but he couldn’t carry it until he earned his whittling chip. I’d also recommend something with a locking blade as it’s safer.

To young, having 7 grand kids from 14 down to 5 I can tell you that he's to young. Even when you put it away and us it when you're together, he'll know it's his, will look for it, and usually find it and sneak it out. Just like we did as kids.
10 would be better.

I say get him a balisong and let him go to town, he can function with 8 fingers.

See you don’t even have to spend any money.
