View Full Version : Thanks, Cap, a complete turkey hunt.....

Well, almost complete and successful. ;)

I finally got enough free time, yesterday, to go to my little turkey lease land, and it was a beautiful day for both hunting and fishing.
First, I fished the big cattle pond, and caught enough crappie, bream, and bass to fillet and give to the landowner and his wife.
Then, I hit the turkey woods around 3 pm.....I sat and called with my best impersonation of Cap's red wasp call, which he shared with me, last year.
At 5:15 pm, 9 hens and a jake leisurely walked out of the woods, and pecked and fed their way across the wide-open pasture.....they stopped and fed within 20 steps of me for what seemed like an eternity.....one ole hen must have gotten tired because she just laid down, right in front of me.
I figured someone, prolly an adjoining neighbor, had already killed the gobbler patriarch of the flock because only the jake was escorting the hens.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of movement across the pasture.....out stepped the biggest meanest-looking gobbler that I've seen in quite a while.....he had to be a 4 or 5 year old bird.
I could see his beard, dragging the ground with my naked eye at 250 yds. away.....now, if he would just follow the flock across that pasture !!!!!
It was an agonizing wait, but he leisurely fed across the pasture, but never joined the group.....he hung up at 55 yards, and I could tell the hens were getting a little nervous, when they started feeding in the opposite direction at a quick pace.....it was now or never !!!!!
I've killed gobblers with my Rem. 870 SPS 12 gauge full choke, out to 70 yds., so I felt good about making the head shot.....I had a perfect sight picture, a perfect gun rest, the perfect gun, ammo, etc......everything was perfect !!!!!
I squeezed off the shot, and the big gobbler literally exploded in a cloud of feathers and dust.....but, instead of seeing the " gobbler death flop", he got up, and ran back across the field from whence he came, but he was definitely wounded !!!!
I was so totally stunned, I couldn't even take a second shot.....I got up, and just stood there in amazement at what I had just witnessed.....finally, I walked over to where he had entered the wood line, but found nothing but a trail of feathers.....my search ended at the property line of the adjoining posted property.
I called my landowner, and informed him of the situation, and he was going to try to get permission to look for the gobbler, this morning.
I was totally distraught over wounding that big beautiful gobbler, and replayed the entire hunt in my head, over and over on my trip home, last night.
The hunt was perfect, and in hindsight, I absolutely would not do anything differently.
And, thanks, Cap, for sharing that red wasp call technique with me.

Just a handful of feathers and a stringer of fish....Oh, well, maybe next time !!!

Ha, not a chance.....gotta have a 6 inch-plus beard here in MS.....if I was gonna violate, I'd have dusted that big ole fat hen. ;)

Good hunt.. Bought one of those "Red Wasps" this winter (plus 6 more calls on clearance). Haven't even taken it out of the package.. What's the secret technique????? I won't tell anybody.. ;)

Weird. When I asked that question, your post ended where you said the hens and jake walked across the pasture! That was the end of the post. It sure makes more sense seeing the rest of the post. No clue why it was cut off this morning.

Well, Thump, I had to stop posting, and answer my phone.....sorry about that, but it was my turkey lease landowner on the phone line.....he found my gobbler, and nothing had bothered it, during the night !!!!!
I dropped everything, and made the 1-1/2 hour trip over there, in about an hour(yes, I drove fast ;))
He got permission to look for my gobbler from the adjoining landowner, and found the gobbler about 200 yds. beyond the property line.....being from out of town, I just didn't feel comfortable trespassing, but I prolly could have easily found the gobbler, yesterday, myself.
The bird is actually bigger than I thought.....he weighed exactly 22 lbs. with a 10 inch beard and 1-1/4 inch spurs.
My landowner buddy went way beyond being a good friend, and I couldn't thank him enough....the Good Lord sho 'nuf blessed me with this beautiful bird!!!.....and, thanks again, Cap !!!!!
Pics are to follow, as soon as I get finished with the picture taking, and showing him off to my buddies. ;)

Is it just my imagination? Or do you get fuglier every year? ;)

There is no bottom to fugly, so we've got a lot more to endure in the coming years based on your premise

Man that’s a great story. I’ve had them get up from a death flop and run off. It’s a sure enough sickening feeling.
I’m glad you were able to locate.
I’ve had a fairly decent season this year but not been able to get out much.
Congrats on a great bird!

Ooo my Gawd !!!.....this is a hunting site, with a pic of a big ole gobbler, and Tpost notices my purty laigs !!! ;)

You’re too honest Eddie. If you look at most turkey hunter’s pic the bird is always in front of them and the pic is taken from down low to up, all to make the bird look bigger. Like longarming a fish.

22 pounds is a hoss! was it cool enough that you could at least use the breast?

Regrettably, no.....temps were in the 60’s that night, and just not worth the risk of trying to salvage the breast meat.
However, no predators had touched the bird during the night, so the beard, spurs, and tail fan were perfectly intact, and will be going to the taxidermist.
I haven’t decided, yet, on the style of mount.....however, there are lots of really unique things that a taxidermist can do with just those 3 items.

Eddie puts HIMSELF closer to the camera on his shots. He thinks it makes his woo-hoo look bigger. ;)

Woo wha?

It got down to 34 here this morning. Fruit trees are blooming like crazy. These late frosts are a bitch. We had a killer on Apr 23rd last year.

Trust me Mudward, you DO NOT want to do that! Take it from me, the voice of experience. I used to run mine down my pants leg (one reason I can never wear shorts) and tuck it into one of my socks. Then I'd slip my boots on to secure it. One evening I went over to my girlfriend's house. Big mistake! She answered the door in a flimsy little see-through nightie and I immediately kicked her friggin' teeth out! :hair

What a great story Big Muddy! I love listening to folks who know what they are doing when it comes to turkey hunting. And, yep, if there's a trick to the trade Cap will know all about it and put you on the right track.

And that is one dang nice gobbler. Congrats buddy. :)
