Lynn says the hotel was booked up but everyone has been cancelling reservations like crazy and she hasn’t had a thing to do all week. The parking lot has been empty and the place looks like a ghost town. Today, management announced they’re going to be scheduling hourly employees for UNPAID days off!

We lost $2600 in rentals on our Airbnb..I'd imagine it will get significantly worse before it gets better.

I think this is going to have a much larger impact than anyone thought. I'm actually not sure what to think right now. Being in WA I'm basically at the epicenter for the US, and right now I don't see a drastic change other than the policies. In the last 48 hours we've seen

- Colleges and K-12 either shutdown or go online
- No major events allowed over 250 people
- NCAA tourney players only / NBA suspended
- Stores are absolutely bare, as well as streets (weird in SEA)

Lynn just texted that, as of this morning, they only had 3 rooms available for tomorrow. She says they now have 66 available.

I heard Princess Cruises has grounded their fleet for at least 2 months. I can't imagine what the economic effect will be after all the dust settles. The stock market is trashed.

I think the death toll thing is pretty uncertain still. Probably the most shocking news to me yesterday was the Ohio Dept of Health official that said they estimated they have 100,000 ACTIVE cases of coronavirus right now. Even if you apply the 50% governmental bullshit rule that’s a hell of a lot more penetration than anyone else has said publicly.

Are they giving LE any kinds of forecasting that not generally available? Just curious.

As you probably already know, being a Dad, but daycare is a big old petri dish. I think we caught e erything going around when my kids were in day care. With kids out of school, parents are left with very few options that might not make it worse.

I keep thinking about the economy. It seems this virus is affecting EVERYTHING in our lives right now. Russia and Saudi Arabia are in a price war right now. The travel industry itself is enough to hit the major oil producers. People aren't driving for vacations, cruise lines are shut down, the airline industry has cut back and oil prices have tanked. It's $1.96/gal. here right now and prices are dropping like a rock. Russia may win the price war over the Saudis because they are much more diversified. Think about it, what income does Saudi Arabia have other than oil? In a selfish sort of way, I'm enjoying the "cheap" gas, but our own country recently became an oil exporter and now the fracking that has put us there, is much too expensive a process to compete with Russia and the Saudis. Our domestic companies have sunk a ton of money into our oil production, but what happens now with all the cheap, foreign oil now available? Like the travel industry, they're going to be forced to shut down their production. The domestic oil companies borrowed heavily from the big banks and if they can't pay their loans on time, banks will start calling in their other loans ..... which will drive Wall Street crazy! It's a viscous cycle and I have no idea where this will end. Who'da thunk the world economy could be brought down by a frigging virus? This is what Hollywood movies are made of.

It will be hard to fulfill the need if the manufacturers can’t get the parts they need from China, and if we are all socially distancing who will be at work to make them, ship them, stock them, and sell them? We all saw the trickle down when the Big 3 almost went under. A lot of the industry near me is automotive based parts suppliers, they about went under when there was no need for what they made. This time it seems it will trickle up when their are no parts for the big manufacturers.

How are companies going to function is half of their employees can’t or won’t come to work because of child care issues?

Pretty cool couple of things here in the community. 1) A lady posted on our community page that she was going to make XX lunches (based) on demand and they would be on her front porch every morning for kids to pick up. 2) For small businesses people are going in and buying gift cards for a later date, but to help the small shops stay afloat.

We might have to go back to the what we did in the old days where one person worked and the other stayed home. I know there are a lot of single parent families out there.

We didn’t have day care when I was a kid. We survived.

Could be the economic engine ran over its own crankshaft in the last week. Time will tell. But it is unveiling some serious weaknesses with the whole globalised and financialized system.

I'm with you Chilly. Maybe this will be a wake-up call as to how important it can be to make our own stuff. I've always wondered how we would fare if there was a repeat of WWII. Would we be able to crank up our factories and fend for ourselves the way we did back then?

Our Governor just shut down the entire K-12 school systems in the state for the next two weeks, then Spring Break is the following week, so we have a few million kids out of school for 3 weeks.
I have one son and three DIL's that work for the schools, I'm sure they'll still be paid, but that's a lot of time out of school, about a 1/3 of what summer vacation is. I'm sure there will be some type of computer interaction between the school and the kids during this time.
Another son works for a huge software firm, he travels a lot, but last week he was in Boston and on Friday the entire company was told to work from home for the rest of the month, then it will be a wait and see.
Third son is with the State Police, so far nothing has changed except the carry masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, I guess LEO's can't work from home.
My big concern is how this plays out in about 3 months, we've booked a cruise with Disney for the entire family (8 adults and 8 kids)
with air fair lodging and the cruise I have about 40K invested, travel insurance states that virus problems are not covered.
I'm lucky that our investments are investments and not needed for our retirement, I've lived through a few of these ups and downs and so far the ups after the down come back stronger.

I don't know that we'll or any other nation will be totally self sufficient, at least to the level of living expectations that we have now days. One thing this is shining a big light on is how much manufacturing we've moved oversees and how reliant we are on other countries for materials and minerals. A significant amount of our medicine comes from China ... steroids and other medicines used to fight viruses..... The fact that we no longer have the capability to spin up manufacturing to help with things like masks, respiratory technologies and other things shows how weakened we could be in an all out war.

If the government artificially levels the playing field, as we are attempting to do with these tariffs, crop insurance, and price supports, then that’s no different than the planned economies of socialist countries. But we couldn’t feed ourselves if we don’t have those. Whoa. Time for an honest look in the mirror?

My wife was a "buyer" for the General Electric plant.. She didn't buy electronic "parts".. but everything else from pens to plywood to .. yep.. toilet paper. She said she has never been so happy to be retired..

Just learned that my kids school will be closing too. My wife is a principal in Michigan so she learned last week that her school will be closed for the next four weeks.

My kids will be going Monday and then they will be off for the next two weeks as of now. Thankfully they are old enough that we don’t need to find daycare.

Next week is spring break for most kids in Oklahoma public schools so I think they’re using that week to give parents some extra time to make arrangement for daycare where they have to. Mostall the Verizon folks I know are working WFH.

I saw where Italy is triaging the patients because of a shortage of respirators and similar equipment. Those with the smaller chance of survival are getting passed over for those that have a better chance.

One of Italy’s problems is that they are the second oldest country per capita behind Japan. That could also explain the high death rate there.
