Had about 50 acres of the farm I wanted to burn this year. Conditions got right Sunday so I got up at 6 and plowed my fire breaks.

Looks good and I suspect that will produce some seriously lush greenery for the bambis in the coming weeks.

No those are Loblolly
Our farm is clay land and Long leaf don't do well in Clay. They like sand land.

Thumper that place is a LOT of work to keep it looking good and managed for Cattle and Wildlife

Barry we have thinned these trees twice and have them down to about where I want them.
I would like for them to mature to somewhere around 40-60 basal area per acre. This would be best for quail and i would like to see quail come back in our area. Quail like open mature pine stands
I have plenty of Deer, Rabbit and Turkey areas and I would like to do something for the quail. Getting the sunlight to hit a little on the ground of these mature open pine areas will produce the grasses and seed needed to help Quail return...
Take Care, Larke

Hey I really like this. I love it when I see landowners focus on helping the wildlife in the area. Consider yourself getting a hearty pat of the back from this Montanan.

Cap, I've got about 90 acres of hardwoods in a separate tract, that I'd love to do a controlled burn on, too....right now, it's raining about every other day, so I guess that's out of the question for now.

Looks like you did a really good job.

Do you have any wild plums in your wildlife strip? Out here the quail just love those plum thickets.

Funny you should mention the plums Posthole. I ordered a hundred whips and planted them all over the farm. Mostly in sunny food plot areas. They are doing well but did not bear fruit this year. I think I will feed them this year and see how they do.

When I started the Tulsa Chapter of Quail Unlimited one of the projects we did was go in halfsies with a local NTF chapter and transplant a bunch of Chickasaw Plum thickets to several of the WMA's in this area. That was many years ago, I should go check them out and see how they are doing.

Is this that area you've been talking about burning that was SOooooooo thick with sweet gum saplings?
