I started a lawn mowing service when I was 10 years old and actually developed a list of neighbors on a regular mowing schedule. Now I have to admit, my dad purchased the small, gas mower from SEARS, but I had to keep our own yard mowed. I also had to buy my own gas. When I was 12, I bought my first brand new bicycle. A Schwinn Stingray! (wish I still had it) I got a VERY small discount (no paycheck) because I worked over my Christmas holidays (6th grade) helping the Schwinn dealer assemble and clean new bicycles for the Christmas rush. I expanded my business and started raking leaves as well as edging around the walkways/driveways with a used, gas edger I purchased. I was about 13-14 when I upgraded my Stingray to a new Schwinn Varsity 10-speed. In high school, I worked full-time (car dealer) during the summers and worked part-time during the school year. If I wanted something, I had to pay for it. I really had no problem with that as it had been taught to me, that's just how the world works. With 6-kids in the family, dad's salary paid the rent, utilities, incidentals and bought groceries. That was about it.

During h/s, I started a savings account and when I graduated, that was depleted when I enrolled as a Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Tennessee. A small loan was taken out (for me) by my dad (can't remember the details), but it paid dorm expenses and tuition. I bought all my books and pretty much supported myself with my savings and a piddly part time job after classes. I paid that loan back to my dad after I entered the military.

Now for my question. If Biden ends up forgiving student loans, do you think I might be able to get reimbursed for the loan I had to work so hard to pay off as a young 18-year old who was taught financial responsibility at a very young age? Just asking. :stirthepot

Not unless you had documented proof of two or more of the following:

1) A degree in Islamic ballet

2) Burned and looted a local business

3) Protested the working class not supporting you

4) Considered socialism as a viable alternative to democracy

5) Publicly protested Trump

6) Being a card carrying full term abortion advocate

7) Considered anyone southern a racist

8) Occupied and trashed a public park

9) and last but not least.....pulled down a statue

About the only reason I’ll still be working for the next 10 years is to pay for healthcare and finish putting my kids through college. So, if we’re gonna start giving that shit away, I hope it’s soon. [emoji56]

I finish my Master’s degree in December so that means the loans are coming due starting in June. Sure would be nice not to have pay for it. [emoji12]

Good job, DD. I got my Masters while working full time and raising a couple of kids. So, I know what a huge accomplishment that is.

Can't imagine doing a degree while raising yonkers. Hats off to both of you.

Awww, that's a piece of cake! I was going to classes, had a small part-time job, was drinking like a fish, smoking pot and getting boinked on a VERY regular basis! No wait! Maybe THAT'S why I didn't get my degree! ;)

Naaa, TBH, I had all advanced courses in h/s, up through Trigonometry and Calculus, as well as all of my sciences through Physics. All my Freshman year of college did was set me back about 2 years with classes I carried with a 4.0 average in high school. A total waste of time. Add the fact, for some silly reason, our quarterly grade average was an average of all our test scores, MINUS the lowest score which was thrown out. So, I could party my ass off, cram the night before a test just to brush up, then slide until the next test day. Plus, since they threw out the lowest score, I could not even show up for one test, take a zero and it wouldn't affect my grade average! (don't ask me, I didn't make the rules)

When they came out with the draft lottery, my "winning number" was 51. I went down to the local Army recruiter to see what this meant and he said I would absolutely, positively be drafted, but with my student deferment, I wouldn't be drafted until after I finished school. I went home and thought about my options.

#1 - Running away to Canada.
But I didn't know anybody in Canada and wasn't sure where I'd live or if I could even hold a job legally. I nixed that idea.

#2 - Go into the military, do my time, then go back to school with the G.I. Bill paying my way instead of ME paying for my education out of pocket, THEN going into the military. It seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I signed on the dotted line. :thumbsup
