A woman goes into Cabela’s to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter.

The clerk was standing behind the counter wearing dark glasses. She says to him, “Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?” He says, “Ma’am, I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.”

She doesn’t believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, “That’s a 6-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-pound test line. It’s a good all-around combination, and it’s on sale this week for only $20.”

She says, “It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!”

As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. “Oh, that sounds like a MasterCard,” he says.

She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was her who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around?

The man rings up the sale and says, “That’ll be $34.50 please.”

The woman is totally confused by this and asks, “Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20? How did you get $34.50?”

He replies, “Yes, ma’am. The rod and reel is $20, but the Duck Call is $11, and the Catfish Bait is $3.50.”

She paid it and left without saying a word.

Do states usually tax grocery items? We have no tax on general groceries, but they do tax prepared stuff like sandwiches and ready-to-eat stuff, including candy, etc. They also tax alcoholic beverages (of course) and soft drinks, stuff like that.

We do tax clothing except on tax exempt days before school starts. Many things fall into the exempt category if it can even remotely be related to "school supplies". It's always a good time time to buy a new computer then, if you're in the market at the right time. I did that with my laptop. I just used my p/c or phone until tax exempt day (or weekend maybe?).

That’s the way it is in Indiana too. No tax on grocery items but there is on prepared food and non foodstuffs as well as everything else.

Our groceries are subject to sales tax and there’s an extra sales tax on “meals”.

We tax it all here in Oklahoma. We do have a weekend tax holiday before school starts every year.

No sales tax on groceries here and better yet, no State Income Tax! :thumbsup

We also have no tax on meds, either Rx or non-Rx including "home remedies" and no tax on Rx medical devices including eyeglasses, contacts, etc. Menstrual cups, Panty liners, Sanitary napkins and Tampons, etc. are not taxable. There is a list a mile long of misc. non-taxed items here (although I have no idea why anybody here would be interested). https://floridarevenue.com/Forms_library/current/dr46nt.pdf

I’ve always been jealous of how low Florida’s taxes are. They always are in the bottom 10-15 states for taxes.

They’re still shaped like a dick though.

Just for the record Montana has no sales tax on anything. I miss that. You don't really appreciate it until you go to buy something expensive like guns, boats, or cars. On top of that their daily prices on groceries is about the same as it is anywhere, just no annoying sales tax at the check out counter. Utah taxes everything.

I just did a remodeling project at the house and thankfully I have a buddy with a tax exempt number that I was able to use for most of the supplies. Saving 7% on $1000 with of tile was sure nice.
