Hunting Season Retrospective

Too much politics on here lately so I thought I’d post some hunting pics. I hunted my butt off for Archery and ML seasons. Probably 7 out of 8 weekends. COVID followed by pneumonia slowed me down for about a month and I finally got out for a few days late season. I spent some quality time in the woods and found some productive new spots. The first pic is the doe I shot during archery and the second pic is the buck I shot Opening Day of Rifle. Interesting buck that I thought was bigger. He’s only 4 point, but his rack is outside the ears. I saw the main beam was wide and was surprised he didn’t even have brow tines. I knew he wasn’t massive, but it was my first time hunting with a new rifle and in a new stand site...

I shot a 6-point one season that looked exactly like that! Nice, wide rack with no brow times. It was a nice deer, but kind of a bummer in a way.

Illegal I parts of VA. But, not where I was hunting. I thought the rack was pretty cool and am getting a euro mount done. Probably a good buck to take out of the gene pool either way.

I'd have prolly gotten in trouble in Arkansas. Depending on how open he was for a clear view, I'd prolly have shot that one not realizing there were no brow tines.

I've pretty much eaten my share of venison, and the absolute best venison I've ever eaten was several years ago.....a nice 4 point, nearly identical to CD's second pic, accidently ran into the power pole cable in our front yard, and broke his neck, when he was spooked by the mail man's passing truck.
I immediately skinned him out, and hung him in my cooler for about 5 days.....even compared to the young does I've harvested, this young buck's venison was absolutely awesome.

Cool pics. I would have posted one but I shot mine from the base of the first tree into the woods off my side yard.... maybe 100 foot from the house. James Fennimore Cooper couldn't have made an adventure out of that hunt. :)

Seems to be a lot more 3-4 year old kids killing these little bucks (legal for kids) than used to be if you know what I mean. Texas A&M did a 20 year study that disproved spikes growing up to be big bucks

Last time I was down at Larke’s he woke me up from a nap in my stand via text asking me if I wanted this little buck he was looking at to take home. I heard the shot before I could hit enter on ‘Hell yeah’. Artie skint and quartered him for me and we threw him in the freezer and the next day I took his ass home to my frying pans in Oklahoma. That deer was a great eater too. Raised on Larke’s corn.

Indiana has had a “one buck” rule since 2002. This limits a hunter to one antlered deer per year no matter how it is harvested (archery, firearm, muzzleloader). Prior to that a hunter could take an antlered deer by each method each year.

I have noticed that there are a lot more older bucks being taken than in the past since most hunters are being more selective in what they take so the so-so younger bucks get passed over and have a chance to mature.

DD, that is the way it is hear, in that you can take a buck with any weapon you have a tag for, hence my double the day after Thanksgiving, first the muzzleloader and 12 minutes later the bow.

Have a feeling we will be going to one buck only at some point in the future.
