I read an article today that states our cautions (masks, social distancing, etc) for Covid-19 virtually eliminated our flu season this year.

According to the article, this is what they said about LAST flu season (before Covid)

Last flu season, the CDC estimated the virus was responsible for “38 million illnesses, 18 million medical visits, 405,000 hospitalizations, and 22,000 deaths.”

But THIS flu season was basically a non-issue.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that as of January 30, there have been just 1,316 positive flu cases in its clinical surveillance network since September.

Now, we've debated previously whether hospitals are "fudging" on their Covid numbers because they can rake in bazillions if the patient is diagnosed with the virus, but get squat for a flu diagnosis. I don't know about you, but I see b/s padded into the numbers. Duh! If you offer me $10,000 to treat a Covid patient and $100 to treat a flu patient (made up numbers to make a point) .... what do you think MY diagnosis would be? PLUS ... there's no double-checking by the gov't as to verifying the diagnosis. I'll guarandamntee you, if you come into my office with so much as a sniffle, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE COVID! :slaphead

If youwantvto argue with Johns Hopkins then that’s your business. But please don’t ever try to tell me we have the best medical system in the world if you beleive that because you’re saying they’re frauds.

I won’t argue the pointwith you other than to say I thinkthey are telling us as true as they know.

Of course there's no way I know what's right and what's wrong ... it just looks hokey as hell to me. I'm simply throwing it out there. Does Johns Hopkins double check every Covid diagnosis reported in the US? I didn't think so.

Checking e ery one and claiming there is massive fraud are two separate ends of a very long stick.

along those lines - and I believe - "true". I was talking to a friend of mine up on the Iron Range. His sister is an "infectious disease specialist".. She is normally inundated with strep throat, whooping cough, etc. cases this time of year. She has virtually none - lowest incidences in her career.. Attributes it to Social distancing and mostly, masks.. unintended consequence?..

I wonder what the results would be with social distancing and requiring condoms? ;)

Maybe people just aren't reporting or seeking aid for flu/colds because of Covid stigma.

What a load of complete horseshit. If that were true, Covid-19 should have been prevented in the same way. From the CDC:

*What are the similarities between COVID-19 and influenza?

Both COVID-19 and flu can spread from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). Both are spread mainly by droplets made when people with the illness (COVID-19 or flu) cough, sneeze, or talk.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It may be possible that a person can get infected by physical human contact (e.g. shaking hands) or by touching a surface or object that has virus on it and then touching his or her own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

Both flu virus and the virus that causes COVID-19 may be spread to others by people before they begin showing symptoms, with very mild symptoms or who never developed symptoms (asymptomatic).*

What it really means is there will be calls for masking and social distancing every year during flu season from now on.

other similarities between COVID-19 and influenza. The medical industry, big Pharm and politicians get richer and make some major political hay
