With the nephews. Last year was an atlatl and arrows(or darts). This year its a blunderbuss kit.
A load of 60 grns of RS Pyrodex with 1oz of #6 shot seems to be just right for experienced and beginners alike.
I can only imagine what the reaction will be when some teacher asks "So, what did you do this summer?"

Repel boarders! Have any good atl atl stories? I’d like to hear about it. Did you use a counterweight, banner stone type deal?

I just found an atlatl design on the 'Net and copied it. My nephew spotted the almost completed spear chucker in my garage:

"What is that on the wall?"
"You're gonna have to point to it. There's junk all over my wall"
"That wooden handle thing?"
"That? That's an 'atlatl'. The injuns used to use that to throw spears better"
"We studied that when learning about ancient people. I never thought I'd see one, but if somebody was going to have one, it would be you..."
"Wanna try it?"
"SURE!!!"
So I had joined two old aluminum arrows together to make a practice dart. He promptly launched it four doors down the street.
We adjourned atlattling until the next day. I took him, his brother, and gramma to a local park to find river cane and fling arrows.
With just plain cane arrows, within 20 minutes, he was aiming a targets.
We went back to add fletching and such to a few more darts.
The kid is a natural spear flinger...

I have wild turkey wing feathers to make some darts this year. Might try a banner weight if I can rig something up.
Four inch white duct tape makes fine improvised fletching in a pinch.

That is the model. I don't know how I did that. Mine is ash with an antler tip and a paduak wood tip.

I have a couple pieces of hedge apple drying now that should be ready by fall to do something with. An Atlatl was one of thethings I was thinking about.
