What’s your take on allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices? The nay sayers (that would be those that have the most to lose monetarily) claim it would greatly reduce pharm’s ability and desire to do R&D. Looks to me like what it’s mainly producing is profits. At our expense.

That annual trip through the donut hole (if you’re on medicare) is no fun if you have any kind of chrnic condition that requires medication. Guess where that money goes?

You can prolly tell where I come down on this.

Just a question, if the pharma companies are in fact using a big chunk of that money for R & D and it’s taken away, do we then place limits on their liability if a drug causes some other problem?

I don’t really have an informed answer Posty. In general, I think competition is a good thing and, in general, the way we finance healthcare (not just Medicare) is effed up. I know every time I see a drug ad in TV or one of those hot Pharma reps bringing free lunch into the Dr’s office I wonder how much is spent on marketing and ads vs. research…

I love the disclaimers in the drug ads that say “Don’t take drug x if you are allergic to drug x”.

How the hell do I know if I’m allergic to this new thing you just came out with if I’ve never taken it before?

I laugh at that almost daily Deppity and Lynn has gotten tired of me mimicking the ads. They tell you how great their drug is and you should ask your doctor to prescribe it ... but then tell you not to take it if you're allergic to it! Well duh! But how would you know?

Socialism is often the word thrown out when we talk about trying to fix part of this whole medical shitteree. The fact is, the very definition of socialism is when the government plans the economy. The government, in other words, picks the winners and losers.
In this case, it seems to me like with the current government Medicare regulations, they chosen to make pharm the big winner, and at our expense. Wouldn’t allowing affinity groups like employers and medicare that represent tens of miullions of people to use their purchasing power to reduce costs for their members be more ike free enterprise than disallowing pricenegotiations?

It cost about three bucks to make a month supply of insulin. A 30 day supply sells for about $600

That's a lot of research and development

I thought the real definition of socialism was the government controls the means of production and distribution.

Add the clause ‘or regulates’ to it and you’ve got it. Many socialist countries have privately owned businesses. Hell, they gotta line somebody’s pockets. That’s where all those dachas came from.
