Anyone ever been? If so, what are the must-do things to do or sights to see while there?

Heading out tomorrow for a conference there.

We’ll dang! That’s kind of short notice!

We’ve been many times, but it’s been many years ago. On our visits, South Tahoe and North Tahoe were like two different worlds in a way. South Tahoe was the younger, party crowd area with plenty of nightlife. North Tahoe was a bit more laid back and more relaxing. I’ll check with my brother once they’re out and about today, but I don’t know how timely it’ll be for you. They spend a month at a time up there once or twice a year. In fact, they spent the month of August in Tahoe before we started our present adventure the beginning of September. (We’re in Mississippi now). The trip before this last one, they had to evacuate Tahoe during the middle of their stay due to the fires. They said the smoke was so thick, they couldn’t have stayed anyway, even if they hadn’t received evacuation orders.

That said, if you have transportation, I’d take a cruise up to Emerald Bay for the scenery, then drive around the east end for some nicer scenery if you want to get away from the casinos and busier parts of South Tahoe (where I assume you’ll be if you’re there for business).

We’ll, how is the trip going? (Or how WAS it?)

The trip was good and glad that we stayed for a couple of days outside of the conference window.

We pulled into town about supper time on Saturday so only checked into the hotel (Hard Rock) and had supper at The Oyster Bar which was GREAT! Sunday morning we went to church and then on a hike south of the Tahoe at Fallen Leaf Lake where the scenery was great both on and off the trail. Part of the conference included a boat ride out to Emerald Bay and back again which was neat. Had no idea the lake was over 1600 feet deep.

After the conference we did some more exploring/hiking around the area at various beaches and state parks. Had dinner on day at an authentic Mexican restaurant in Incline Village on the north end of the lake that was INCREDIBLE! Hit Donner Lake and Donner Pass on Friday where we hiked through a number of the railroad tunnels the mostly Chinese workforce carved out in order to complete the first trans-continental railroad.

I also found out that checking into Circus Circus on a Friday afternoon is VERY similar to the process used at Disney for the popular rides and takes about as long.

All in all it was a good trip full of great scenery once you get out of the crazy casinos.

The corps of engineers can’t hold a candle to good old Mother Nature when it comes to lake building.

Sounds like a great trip! It makes sense to me now that you say it, but I didn’t realize Donner Pass was in the Tahoe area. It’d be pretty cool to “put some tracks in that mud” as the Captain used to say.
