Crazy!

We went for Chinese food in Orlando today and whenever we’re in town, we stop at the big Asian market over there to stock up on “whatever”.

While I was perusing the produce section, I ran across these peaches. At least they look like peaches, they feel like peaches and they smell like peaches, so I assume they ARE peaches (I did everything but taste one). Lynn does the grocery shopping and I very seldom step into a grocery store, so these may be common, I dunno. Anyway, they're FLAT and I’ve never seen them before, so I checked with my good friend Google. They’re called Saturn, or donut peaches.

Here’s a cool video on a method to eat them that I think is pretty cool. You just push the center with your thumb and the pit pops out! Then it looks just like a peach donut!

Didn’t buy any, but they ARE peaches, so I have to assume so. I’ve just never seen them before, so I was wondering if anyone here has. Maybe I’ve been living in a cave.

The majority of the donut peaches grown for commercial production in the United States is California. The "donut peach" was introduced to the United States from China to California in 1869 but has only recently gained wider acceptance. The donut peach is much sweeter than yellow peaches and lower in acidity.

They look pretty cool. And most peaches are very good. The best are amazing imho. Alas they don't seem to like the local late freezes and we can't seem to grow them.

Most of what we get here are Georgia peaches, naturally. I think South Carolina is also a major producer, so many of our may come from there also.
