You folks who like to smoke meat, you ever used persimmon? I saw someone advertising persimmon wood smoker wood for sale this morning. Who’d a thunk it? Persimmon sprouts were our enemy in pastures back home.
Maybe somebody will come steal it if we advertised!

To be perfectly honest, I can't tell hickory from pecan from persimmon on a smoker. It all taste the same to me.

Them persimmon bushes and lespedeza did make for some heavy bales in my youth

I’ve seen it but never tried it. I generally use apple for pork and pecan on everything else. I like hickory but the family finds it too strong.

Y'all mosey on down my way, and I'll load up every truck bed with free persimmon firewood, green persimmons, sprouts, and/or sapling's.
(P.S. You gotta cut your own firewood, but I'll load it for ya.) :biggrin

I grew up on Hickory, so that may be why it's always been my favorite. Once I moved to California. everything was Mesquite. I got used to it and have no problem with it, but Hickory is still in my blood I guess. My Ohio buddy always did a hog when I'd be up there hunting, he always used Apple. It was fine, but I'm not positive what I was really tasting because he'd BBQ the hog on a big grill with a spit and constantly basted the meat with apple juice. NO complaints.

I actually just bought a new smoker/pellet grill to replace the propane grill I’ve had for years.

I’m looking forward to learning about the process because I’ve only used propane grills before.

What did you get? RecTec, Traeger, Green Mountain?

I've had a pellet grill for years. Generally run a two grill setup. I prefer to cook with hardwood charcoal so I have a BigJoe (ceramic), but for ease I like pellets and have a (RecTec, GreenMountain, and Gorilla).

I ended up going with a Traeger. I looked pretty hard at the RecTec but I saw a lot of reviews knocking the wifi and connectivity and where I live service is spotty anyway, and I liked the hopper clean out on the Treager which the RecTec doesn’t have.

I fired up the Egg yesterday and smoked two racks of ribs and a couple sticks of baloney for a Mother’s Day get together today. Of course we had to sample. They’s larrupin!

Pecan for me! Then plain old oak, then mesquite.
