Brush with olive oil, salt and pepper to taste then roast in the oven until al dente. or

steam until tender then stir into a cheese sauce

Steam how?

And about how long in oven?

I tried boiling some last night. Edible, but not great.

Place in pan. Apply olive oil freely. Salt, pepper, place on grill til you see slight grill marks. Eat! Also lemon pepper goes well on it. Yum.

Lynn makes it all the time and it's ... what do you say? "Larupin"? DO NOT BOIL IT! My mom boils the stuff 'til it's nothing but mush. BARF! Al dente is the key word.

Can't tell you how Lynn prepares it ... I just eat it! ;)

I've complimented you for several months.

I am beginning to experience regret.

Wow! What a coinky-dink! I just went down to the kitchen for a glass of water and Lynn's standing at the sink prepping a big ol' pile of asparagus for supper tonight! Hmmm, I assume it's in season now or sumpin'?

I love asparagus, but it makes my big toe hurtto even think about it.

Firts of all, you need to snap off the tough bottom third of it. Then throw it in a pan with some butter and soy sauce and saute until tender. Trust me. Really, trust me here.

Ok, Jim, so be helpful and tell him how Lynn prepared it.

Pan sear on high heat in olive oil, 3 minutes tops, throw parmesan on right when you take it off the heat. Your wife will kiss you for it.

Fresh asparagus goes great with salmon, ya got any left?
Oh, like the others said.

Olive oil, sea salt, pepper and on the grill. OCR in a while a splash of balsamic vinegar.

JB, yes. For SPECIAL occasions.

It's too cold to grill. Weather has gone NUTS. I don't get it.

I like LW's and Len's idea. I have some left, will try that tomorrow. (What about those goofy tops they have? Cut that off too?)

I put oven on BROIL and spritzed olive oil all over it. Broiled for about 5 minutes, maybe 6. Took out and put butter on it. It was pretty good.

No! The top is the best part! Give those to the wife :)

Somehow I keep hearing "Veggie Tale" songs in my head.

What are the tops???? The absolute best part of the spear! Lynn and I are a perfect match ... I like the tips, she likes the "trunks"! Same goes for brocolli ... I eat the tops, she eats the stalks. :D

I like it cold as well. Just steam it until al dente and then cool off quickly with cold water. Douse it liberally with your favorite vinegrette and some crushed nuts. I'm fond of raspberry vinegrette (usually just buy some salad dressing) and crushed pistachios. Walnuts and a little crumbled feta and some balsamic vinegrette works really well. Tightlines suggestion about snapping off the bottom third is right on. A buddy of mine who was a chef also taught me to take a carrot peeler and just shave the skin off the bottom third. A lot of the bitter taste toward the end of the stalk is in the skin.

Here's a penis-shaped asparagus with some knots along it's shaft....looks like these two gals might be looking to "grill" it in a somewhat different manner. ;)

Too cold to grill??

Hell, we had burgers on the grill last night because it was so nice out...it was sunny and 29 degrees with no wind.

Too cold, what a wuss.

As for how to cook it, what Cappy said

BarryBobPosthole

Its never too cold to grill unless you're a pussy.

And you don't have to fix asparagus cause it ain't broke.

I ain't repairing it. I'm fixing it. As in "I'm fixing asparagus, and later I'll be fixin' to eat it".

Duh.

Buckrub

LW, I trusted you.

It was edible. But the soy overwhelmed it. Saute in just butter would have been better. Have a little bit left, will try that tomorrow. Still think Grilling would be best.

My suggestion is the best...

It never ceases to amaze me to what lengths people will go to make crap taste different that what it suppose.
It taste like dirt, put it in the trash

If it were broccoli I would.

But I have to start trying to eat SOMETHING right. I have medical problems. I am a sick man. I am not well. I am fat. I am obese. I am dying. I need more veggies. If I find some I like, why not try them?

Glass pie plate

Clean asparagus and cut into bite size pieces

Put in glass pie plate with a little water

Cover with glass lid

Microwave 5-6 minutes depends on how much you cook

Uncover, shred some cheese on it recover

Once melted serve

You can do the same with broccoli.

Captain
04-19-2013, 08:50 PM
There you go...

Get some dirt follow Sunny's directions above and put some cheese on it and it will taste the same.
Cheesy
And that cheese might help you loose weight too

I do that in the oven with parmesan and a little salt, pepper and olive oil, Sunshine. Its pretty good but its too messy to clean up. Which is why I like grilling it. I'd eat a grilled door knob. Or a fried one if The batter would stick to it.

And Larke....you're deranged.

Butter Lima beans with ham on white buttered bread is the best.

posthole is the only one who could eat at my house. Slice your beets , saute them in a brown sugar and honey glaze. When they start getting tender, chop up the greens and saute them with the beets.

I can honestly say that I can't think of one single garden vegetable that I don't like....yeah, sure, when I was young, I hated things like spinach, squash, cukes, rutabagas, asparagus, etc., but as I grew older, I just developed a taste for them, and now love them all.

And, it doesn't matter how they're cooked, either....in the summer time, when the gardens are bountiful, lots of nights we don't even have meat on the table....nothing but bowls-full of fresh veggies, cornbread, and buttermilk.
