That's an actor. Not sure who, but I've seen him.

If that was off the cuff, it was and is amazing. If it was a script, it's still amazing.

I still hope it never happens......but I see the rift coming. How can it not?

That's Jeff Daniels. Good actor.

I can't decide if I like it or not. I watched it a couple of times. I noticed (being a junior noticer) that the character fails to mention which, in his opinion, IS the greatest county in the world. IMHO, in spite of all of our "shortcomings", I believe we ARE the greatest.(But then, I think the GA Dawgs are the greatest too :) ). Sure we could to better at a lot of things, but we could also do a lot worse. We still have that pesky Constitution that keeps getting in "big government's" way of controlling the populace.

I did a little web searching. It is a clip from an HBO series called "The Newsroom" that aired last summer. I don't get HBO, and don't really watch all that much TV, so I didn't know that.

He does make a valid point. "The media" in general does a poor job of informing folks. Those are (or were at the time) some accurate statistics he quotes, but you won't hear them mentioned much on the news.

A couple of URLs I found on this, along with comments from the readers:

You can't say what the greatest country is. It depends on what you want out of a country. I know a lot of Americans that surely do think this is one sweet place. I know others that pretty much hate it, and some of them are in the White House.

Y'all carry on about boiled peanuts. Some of you drink cherry juice. And don't even start on BBQ. Everyone thinks their own stuff is the best. Food is that way.....religion is that way.......and so is your country. The poorest people in the world go out into the streets and scream and holler and shoot guns in defense of their own way of living.

What I think the guy said..........more than trying to find out who the greatest country is..............is that whatever you thought of this country in the past, it is in decline now. It is not better than it was before. Whatever it was before, it's less now. To me, that was his point.

The reasons can be debated.

I will give you an example of the changes that he addresses and I think you are right Bucky. When I started taking care of sick and injured people twenty some-od years ago, if a 65 year old patient said something was wrong with them, then you better take it seriously. These people lived through a world war and dont complain. Fast forward to now. 65 year olds are now often times whining healthcare system abusers that were the hippy generation of yesterday. I cant imagine what the future brings and dont get me started on the youth of today.
