I picked up an old book at an estate sale over the weekend ... a 1933 edition of Chaucer for 50 cents. I was thumbing through it a minute ago and found an old report card (evidently used as a bookmark) that's 100 years old! (school year 1913-1914)

It belonged to an 11 year old girl in the 7th grade. They had some very interesting subjects back then. (Arithmetic, Reading, Agriculture, Grammar, U.S. History, Geography, Language, Physiology, Civil Government, Spelling and Writing). I guess she wasn't quite a PERFECT angel, but close, as she averaged a 97.5 in "Deportment"! ;)

There were also different "Industrial Work" grades ... one set for girls (Sweeping, Dusting, Cake Baking, Bread Baking, Sewing, Washing Dishes and Ironing) and one for boys (Feeding Stock, Milking, Currying Horses, Providing Fuel and Feeding Poultry). I think it's pretty interesting. (it's from Macon County, but I have no clue what state it's from)

What the hell is an 'E' grade? And there's a 'G' too! Well, he made a G-.

He's a she. ;)

For a Senior Noticer .. you suck! (see second paragraph on front page under "To Parents").

Evidently she really sucked at "sewing"!

Did some searching and a Zerada McClanahan was married to Paul Mangus in Macon, Missouri in the 1930 census. Bet its the same gal.

That'd be kinda cool. I don't know how common the name was back then, but that very well could be her. Is Macon, Mo. also in Macon County?

Yep ... just checked ... there is a Macon County, MO.

You should try to find a relative and see if they would like that.

That's cool! I must be in my pre-curmugeon phase of life cause I think the country could benefit from heading back in that educational direction a little bit.

Brought back an old textbook from the "old stuff" we found at the farm. There's not one of you/us that could have passed any part of 8th grade material, especially when we were in the 8th grade.

Probably true. I have a current rising 8th Grader and I would also qualify it by adding that when it comes to higher reasoning, particularly in Math and Science, those old timers wouldn't have been able to keep up either.

I don't know....... the reasoning skills needed to do the math part of this is beyond me to do quickly, and I have a degree in it. The depth is not there, no. But it's stuff like "Farmer Brown sells 7 1/2 dozen eggs at $0.50 a dozen, and then marks another 3/4 dozen down by 12% and sells them. He buys $2.12 worth of groceries on the way home. How much money does he get home with?" or some such.

Dug around a bit. The name of the school was "Gifford" and there is a Gifford, Missouri which is located in Macon County. I guess that kind'a narrows it down a bit.
