Somewhere in godforsaken Northern Oklahoma a few hours ago, my wife saw a billboard and asked "What's a sooner?" I said "I dunno, something about those guys that drove wagons lickety split to claim some treeless tract of land to make John Steinbeck rich.

Boomer Sooner comes from two kinds of people that participated in the Oklahoma land runs. The Boomers lined up and rode like the dickens at the sound of a starting cannon. The Sooners snuck out a day or two before and waited until the run started and then staked out their claims.
