View Full Version : My turn to brag on grandkids

These two (age 11 and 13) tested successfully yesterday for the highest degree of Junior Black Belt in Kempo Karate. They are 'stuck' till old enough to test for Adult Black Belt.

Some of the drills were just agility and endurance....one was jumping rope 4 minutes, then 35 setups, then 25 pushups........repeat without stopping 3 more times, four times total. My granddaughter, I think, could jump rope all day effortlessly. She put the instructors to shame. Course, she doesn't have a lot to lift to jump!!! But man.....I couldn't have done any of this at age 13, or 11. So while I'm fat, and most of America's kids are fat, these guys are working their buns off twice a week and are thin, but solid as granite. They can't possibly have an ounce of body fat.

So, no state tourney winners, but winners to me, and great kids to boot.

Meanwhile, I cannot post a picture of their big sister, the 15 year old, because I would imagine Bwana's boys, and maybe Ed's grandsons, and some other boys, would start pounding me into the ground for her cell number. Besides, she's too busy practicing every night for marching band.

So there. Laugh at me for bragging, but hey........I'm proud of them.

Grandchildren are fantastic 'Rub. I love all of mine more than mere words can express. Some are too young to understand what's happening with Grandpa and the older ones are full of questions and hugs. I try to explain to them best I can but I don't have any answers to the whys.

None of us have promises, TW. That's why I spend way more than I have to drive out here and visit..........cause I don't get to see them during the year like others do. ALL of mine are far flung.

They told us we'd have answers when we got old and wise, didn't they? Buncha lying dorks!!! :D

One thing is for sure, in a true fight, the guy or girl with the most stamina usually wins. Good for those kids.

That is quite an accomplishment, Bill. My youngest does Tae Kwan Do (Korean form of Karate) and I'm amazed at what these kids learn to do physically. Perhaps even better, are the levels of respect and self discipline that are incorporated into the program.

Great post Bill. Those kids have a twinkle in their eye that comes from true accomplishment. It is good to see.

Wish I had been given the chance to take karate when I was a kid.... might have saved me a couple of broken noses. Never did get the hang of ducking. :)
