anybody have a set of kitchen knives they just think are the cat's pj's? I'm getting ready to throw a bunch of old stuff away and replace it with new. Man, you can pay a mint for the german stuff. is it worth it? Or is plain old Chicago Cutlery as good as the rest?

I've got a set of the J. A. Henckels International knives that were gifted to me several years ago. They've held up well, and keep an edge nicely.

That's one of the ones I've been looking at Niner. They're still in the reasonable price range. the next step up is a big one!

I've got a pretty rag tag collection of kitchen knives (I never throw any away, just add to the pile) and so when the missus broke the tip off one of my faves the other day (don't even ask) I decided to get a whole new set. Until I checked prices on pro quality stuff (get the best, right?). Wowsa! Spendy, ain't the word.

Anyway, I found a replacement for the one she broke for a decent price so I'm happy again.

Let us know what you wind up with. I've always wanted a REAL good set of kitchen cutters but I'm just too cheap to pay the price.

Yeah, I think for the "Made by Germans" units...ONE knife costs about what the whole International set runs.

I dropped the coin on a henkels 7" chef knife. I use that bad boy almost every meal I cook during the week and still haven't sharpened it after 3 years, I shit you not. I think it's the mid-grade stuff they have. You can get the crap line at Target and other places and they make it seem like the real deal so be careful and lay your eyes on it if you can. There's a big difference in build quality and edge. it's the single blade that tapers thru the tang then thru the end of the handle. They're all made in China now but the line I have says "forged synergy german steel 16008-180" on the blade. I wish I could afford the whole set but Daddy needs a new camera body and he ain't likely getting that either :)

Ha! I found it online and apparently it's not the best kind they make and is pretty dang affordable.

That's the one I have and it could use an edge now but could still keep going for quite some time.

BKB, the set I've got is their "Forged Premio" series. From the looks of things, prolly about the same animal that Len's knife is.

The "big knives" all say "German Stainless Steel" and of course...."Made In China" on the blades. Interestingly, the "steak knives" in the set (which are serrated) say "Stainless Steel" and "Made In Thailand" on them. To tell the truth, I don't use the steak knives in the set all that much as I just don't care for a serrated blade....but they ARE sharp. For table use, I usually use some Chicago Cutlery units that we picked up that have non-serrated blades. That way I can hit them with the steel before we eat and everybody has a nice sharp knife to use.

I just can't abide a dull knife! :biggrin
