Good warm socks: In search of

I need me some good warm socks for cold weather hunting and camping.

And I mean cold by a southern boys standards, like low to mid 20's.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Get yerself some merino wool socks and you'll be set for about anything. REI has 'em. Army surplus has some at the Army surplus store here. I wear a regular cotton athletic sock underneath them to soak up the sweat if your feet sweat (they'll really get cold if they get damp). Haven't found anything warmer of cozier for my feets.

90% merino wool 10% nylon or poly is about all I'm seeing after a quick search.

My uncle taught Ag and Science in a small town high school in SW Arkansas for almost 30 years. Two boys from there that I went to first and second grade with were named Everett and Edison Rose. Everett was chewing tobacco in the first grade.
Anyway, my uncle knew it was time to start feeding his cows when Everett and Edison started wearing shoes to school. and that's when they were in high school.

The secret I found with warm feet consists of three things.
Liner sock of a wicking material, outer sock of heavy wool, and a boot that's large enough to allow you to wiggle your toes.
If the boot is to tight, it eliminates the features of wool to trap and retain air.

I think Jerry's right in. I usually go with a pair if "smart wool" socks with a pair if polypro liners with thinsulate insulated pull on boots that are about a half size larger than I normally wear.

I usually get a size larger boot, and then get a Dr. Scholls (or similar) insert. That's further insulation from the ground, also.

But JB is right on.......

That said, I think I have a pair of boots for every 10 degree change in temp!

There are two kinds of outdoors people. Those whose feet get cold (me), and those who have no clue what that means. The latter believe a 200 g Thinsulate pac boot with a pair of cotton socks are incredibly warm. The former, there is nothing that works short of chemical heat inserts.

Well, he did say low to mid 20's, not 20 below zero. Sheesh! I don't even wear that much crap on my feet in my wadders when I go trout fishing in January!

I have terrible circulation and my feet freeze too. JB is dead on. I wear Under Amour wicking socks with the thickest pair of smart wool I can find. This combo works better than anything else I have tried. Also, I found that wearing heavier pants helps too. I guess they keep the blood from getting chilled before it reaches my feet.

I think smart wool is a brand and yes, they are pricey. If you watch your local Dick's, sometimes they have them buy one pair, get one pair half off.
