I love flashlights.
I only own maybe a dozen or so of them, but I just bought this little puppy and it is one sweet little torch.

500 lumen is a pretty decent for a pocket sized flashlight

I'd have to like them a whole lot to pay that much! Geez! Maybe I am just a cheapskate but I almost cried when I thought I had lost my old Black Diamond and it only cost a third of what that one does. Course me an that old lamp had traveled a lot of miles both hunting and trail running.

They do make some amazing lights now though. Got to admit that.

I had a lot of those "hot" flashlights (I also miss deer right at dark!!!)........but gave 'em all up. If it uses a CR123 battery, I am not interested. They get too hot to hold, and don't dim as they go out.......just go POOF and they're out.........and the batteries cost a mint.

Now, for pocket flashlights I use a Coleman Max. Uses regular batteries. Costs about $25.00

For big light, I use a rechargeable Cyclops.

But thanks anyway.

Lumens and candle power always confuse me. I have a million candle power spotlight I keep in my boat for nighttime navigation and it'll light up stuff from a long way off. The problem is, if it hits ANYTHING in the boat the reflection back will flat out blind you and it takes a long time for your eyes to recover their night vision. So I only use it in tight spots and only hit it for a couple of seconds at a time, to find the closest bank for example. Now, how that translates into lumens I have no idea. I think its like 12.57 candle power for a lumen or maybe its the opposite, can't remember.

But the new LED technology is sure nice isn't it? They're making little pocket lights like that one really powerful now with batteries that last a long time.

I'm still looking for the perfect hat lite. The Browning one is the best one so far.

The batteries are quite expensive. BUT - I can get 2 dozen on amazon for 19$. Duracell's to boot.

2 of the same batteries are 10$ at Walmart.

Posty- They have in fact come a long way the LED's. This one will burn 48 hours on low. And 1 1/2 on high.

I'm telling you, there's a big market out there for a really good quality hat light. Might even be something that the Shark Tank people would be interested in.

Yeah, I bought the cheap ones online too. They lasted about 3 hours. Besides, those flashlights get too hot for what you get.

The coleman max stunned me with how much it'd light up, runs cool, and uses normal batteries.

I'm still not a liker. I have a couple I'd sell you though!!!!

I'm sorry. Make that 1 dozen. Not 2 dozen

This man is crazy about hat lights. I have four, all work well, and NONE of them are good enough for his High Falutin' Majesty.

Did you read "Duracell"

Buckrub
01-10-2014, 03:51 PM
Yes. Turns out Duracell, like Michelin and others, make a second line of stuff for idiots like me to buy online.

The flashlights I have (I have three) that run on CR123 batteries get almost too hot to hold if they are on a long time.

I may be on crack, but that's the truth.

BarryBobPosthole
01-10-2014, 04:32 PM
they're not for looking in your crack. That's probably why they're overheating.

Nah. I'm never wrong. I'm "on crack".

I'm neither in this case.

But I'll tell you what I'll do. I have a Brinkman pocket flashlight right here that runs on CR123 batteries. I'll pay to ship it to any of you, and you put 123 batteries in it, and turn it on, and point it to a blank piece of paper close. Or just put it in your pocket. If it doesn't get as hot as I say, I'll come on here and tell you what kind of crack I use, and where to get it, and apologize. If it does, you pay to ship it back to me.

You're supposed to turn 'em off when you put 'em in your pocket. Otherwise they get hot and your batteries run down fast.

If you think that, you must also be on crack.

I can get a very similar LED light with 360 lumes and MUCH cheaper rechargable batteries for less than $100.00. In fact, I want to say I paid less than $75.00 for mine. I bought a couple of them. I can easily give up the 140 lumen power difference for the cost difference. Heck, 360 is pretty dang bright and brighter than most flashlights for that matter. I figure if I can't see it with this flashlight, I really didn't need to see it that bad.

Arty

I don't claim you can't get similar lumen out of a cheaper flashlight. This one is a upper end one for sure.
This one is extremely well made however, has a lifetime full replacement warranty

PLUS. I paid for it with gift cards. So it wasn't real money!

That's similar to the flashlight I bought #3 to carry while on duty, he loves it, it can also be put on an adapter and hung off the bottom of your AR.
He has never complained about it getting hot.

Public Service Announcement - There is no correlation between pecker size and number of lumens.

That is all.

You're welcome.

Leave it to Barry. :)

Someplace way back in the cortex, I think there are a lot of men who just plain love tools. Can't help it. Born with it and die with it. Pocket knife collections, flashlights all over the place, EDC keychain tools that cost a day's pay, you name it and we love it.

Well, off subject ... kinda but not really ... I grab every one of those old stainless, ribbed Eveready and Ray-O-Vac flashlights I run across at estate sales. I pick 'em up all day long for $0.25 - $1.00 and they'll bring $15 - $20 as soon as they're listed. I'm sure EVERYONE here has had one at one time or another.

http://www.flashlightmuseum.com/flashlights/RA00160.jpg

Some of the old "bullet style" lights can bring even more.

Who is it? Why?

This is a pretty neat flashlight to have around the house.
http://www.blackanddecker.com/power-tools/SL3WAKB.aspx
It runs on 4 AA batteries, and has a high and a low setting.
Wall-mart carries them, if anyone is interested.
The specs say it has a 3W LED (its one of those square-chip LEDs).
According to a calculator I was able to find online, a 3W LED is about 180 lumens.....but I could be WAY off on that.
I do know it is a pretty darned bright light.

My son has one of those. That one is actually what got me looking for a rechargeable, fairly small, hand held. It was at that point that I was by happenstance in Mack's Prairie Wings, and saw the Cyclops and bought it. They are similar, but the Cyclops is brighter and rechargeable (and probably more expensive).

Thump, my grandfather is 92 and still uses one of those old ray-o-vac lights. Equivalent to about 3 candles but they last forever. Best lights ever made for catching night crawlers, not bright enough to scare the little buggers.

Arty, I wasn't trying to steal your thunder. That flashlight you have is really nice. I was just trying to say there are some pretty darn good LED flashlights out there for less money. They probably aren't as heavy duty as yours, but for what I need they hold up fine. I double checked on what I paid. I was quite a bit off. It was only $55.00 for the light, batteries, and charger. Hmmm, since I bought two, if I hold them sidexside does that mean I get 760 lumens? :D
