About two weeks ago I had them fill my tank. $1.79 - that's high. Couple days later we were butchering deer and I mentioned it to my buddy. He says, "Lucky bastard.. I filled yesterday cost me $1.99." Market price this morning from three different distributors.. $3.40 - $3.55 and $3.57 - went up .35 yesterday and said likely not the end.. Seems the price has been good overseas the past year so the manufacturers have upped their production and exported everything they could haul.. Cold winter and guess what? We take it in the shorts again. :hello

Never buy LP in the winter, man............. I never pay over $2.00.........

HideHunter

Yeah.. I bought ahead for years. They won't let us pre-pay anymore. 2008 flood ended that.

I just buy in the summer.............here, and at camp. Sometimes at camp we HAVE to buy when we have to buy, but I buy in summer only at home.

Oh - I see - I'd have to have a 2000 gallon tank. But it's nice and cool up here. Not like the gawd-forsaken south. ;)

Buckrub

Geez.

I have a 250 gallon, and 150 at deer camp. I fill up at home about every 3 years. Course, I use a heat pump to heat the house. This is just for cook stove and a small heater. At camp, we cook with it, heat bathroom, and run an old central unit about 3 hours a year.......but we go through maybe 300 gal a year at camp, using it September through Jan 1.........

So get a 2000 gallon tank. Geez. I bet they'd give you all the tanks you needed if you bought 2000 gallons!

And, Duh, um...........um.........you need 2000 gallons of propane, and I am in the gawd-forsaken south???????

Besides.......I am in the middle of one state...........and then there is one entire state........then you are in the middle of the next one. There's only TWO states between us total, man.

HH I believe there is an LP shortage of sorts going on, or at least there is in this country due to all the late corn that needs to be dried before it can be sold.

There are a couple of big farmers up here that I have heard of burning 1000's of gallons of LP per day trying to dry this year's late corn crop. Can you imagine that bill?

BarryBobPosthole
01-22-2014, 01:36 PM
They should make them burn ethanol to dry it.

Yep Bwana.. I kind of looked into that.. "Polar Vortex" was the final straw in a perfect storm situation created by excessive exports. .02 gallon of LP for each point of moisture per bushel. $3.50 LP and $4.16 corn. Someone's going to have to sharpen their pencil now.

Thumper
01-22-2014, 01:56 PM
Sheeeesh! It'd be a lot cheaper just to ship that corn down here to "sun dry". :D

I worked outside a LOT when I lived there. There were many days I took TWO showers. Didn't do me any good. And the jungle rot they have down there is hard to get rid of. When I left there and moved to Dallas, it went away totally.

I'd like to know - and doubt if we can find out - what they are getting for exported gas. I'm sure once the price approaches, or exceeds, that level domestically - it will begin to right itself as far as a "shortage". That said - propane manufacturers probably have contracts overseas that have to be honored. No relief in sight as far as moderating temperatures. We have enough people in Iowa who are living on the edge of their income - this will hurt. -6 here this morning and winds blowing about 25. . But I ain't sweating. ;)

Well, that cold front hit here today. It's 65 degrees and you'd think it was snowing the way people are bundled up around here. I'm still in my usual shorts and t-shirt, but I like cool weather. No need for a heater though .. it's still warm inside.

No natural gas in my neighborhood, only LP. My house is one of those "sweet" "total electric" houses they built in the 80's. I got two so-called heat pumps and I detest them. They blow "cold" air.

We've been using the Fireplace Insert a LOT this winter trying to keep the heat pumps turned off. Well......a little chimney fire the other night has THAT shut down until the chimney sweeper dudes can get here to make sure its safe to use again.

Air feels cold cause it's 85 degree air, and you're a 98 degree mammal. But 85 is warmer than 60 degree ambient temp!!!

The new unit I got last year does blow a LOT warmer air than the other one, though, and makes NO noise. I think the SEER rating is like twelve million or maybe forty bazillion or something. New ones are nice for us Suthren Gentlemen Folks.

I can't imagine how much my Mrs. Would complain about being cold if we had a heat pump.

Buckrub
01-23-2014, 09:41 PM
It's not for Yankee Climates. Doesn't work if temp is below 18 or so. But above that, the most efficient heat you can have. Gas heat is like .85 at absolute BEST. Air Source Heat Pumps are like ..........well, read this:

My Ohio buddy/father-in-law/hunting partner has oil wells on his property and part of the agreement is that the natural gas from the wells is piped to the homes on their farm. His in-laws house (2 houses), the shop, three garages, and his house are all heated by natural gas from the wells. The trucks just come in every once in a while to empty the holding tanks full of oil. I can see now that the gas agreement they made with the oil company was a nice little bonus! They DO have electric baseboard heaters for emergency back-up though. Sometimes with extended ultra-low temps (like now I'd imagine), the gas pressure may drop due to heavy usage and they'll have to go to their back-up plan.

BarryBobPosthole
01-24-2014, 12:06 PM
I wonder how they compress it to keep the pressure up in the pipes?

BKB

Thumper
01-24-2014, 12:22 PM
To tell the truth P-hole ... I have no clue how the system works. Maybe they don't compress it and that's why the pressure drops with heavy usage. I don't know. I've never seen any sort of "compression system" on the property or around the wells, can they simply run off of "natural pressure"?

We've never lived in a house that didn't have natural gas, few years ago replaced my old furnace with a new 90+ unit.
We heat three stories, about 2500 sq. ft. My gas bill this month was higher than usual @ $185, usually stays around $100 for the winter months. It's been a really cold and windy winter this year, I think everyone is paying more.

What Is the Current Price Per Gallon of Propane in Arkansas?
Answer
The current price per gallon of propane in Arkansas is around $2.39 as of January 3, 2013. This can change depending on the need of propane. It also depends on what company it is bought from but most companies keep the price similar.

lol.. yeah well.. Jan 3rd it was 1.79 here.. One of my best friends nephew is one of our distributors over here. He says now they've added "distribution" to the list of reasons.. Everything that is available (and there isn't a lot) is stored at the Gulf pending exportation.

I guess the governor of Oklahoma declared a state of emergency here and one of the things she did was relax the rules on how many hours the transport drivers can work because of the shortage. Our nearest port for it is in Kansas I believe.

True story. Bassdog, just out of the blue one time, bend over and lit a fart that shot blue flame out a foot. Problem was, he had on a thin pair of dress slacks. Damn near burnt his ass.

sorry, but that visual will go with me to my grave and you just triggered it. Pretty funny times.

Been there, done that P-hole. We used to have farting contests in the dorms at college to see who could blow the biggest flame. I worked up a good one (after an evening of beer and pickled eggs)! I decided to make things a bit less restrictive and dropped my jeans. I ripped a big one through my THIN tighty-whities and ... well, like you said, it wasn't one of my brightest ideas! :(
