I got pulled over for it once and got my ass chewed. Never threatened to ticket me but he did tell me I had a tail light out and I might wanna get it fixed if that's what I was going to drive down the road doing.

Nope, it wasn't at night. He was right behind me when I was doing it, which made it even more embarassing, so he probably saw my one good tail light going off and one while I was flashing my headlights. You couldn't flash your lights with your blinker control back in those days.
