Nice! I grew up going to a barber shop like that. they had stacks of playboys laying all around I could look at while my Dad got his hair cut first. made for some difficult walks to the chair when it was my turn!

they had the old school coke machine where you put your nickel or dime in, and had to yank the bottle out of the grasp of an evil claw mechanism.

Wow! I got my very first haircut as a kid at the barbershop across the street from my dad's gas station back in 1952. The owner (Jack Carter) cut my hair and from that point forward, he was the only barber I went to. Years later he opened a barber college in Orlando and mom would load all four of us boys in the ol' station wagon to take us for our haircuts. Students would cut my brother's hair ... but Jack would always drop what he was doing to gather a bunch of new students around, then demonstrate by cutting my hair with them watching. He cut my hair until we moved away when I was 15. Haircuts were a whopping $0.50 at that time. The only other barber I ever had in those times was from "Wimpy" at Heddon's Barber Shop in Sylva, N.C. when I'd spend the summers with my grandparents. I remember it was right on the main street downtown and you had to go down a flight of stairs to the shop which was below ground level.

Here's a pic ... Wimpy is the first barber in the rear (actually the front of the shop by the stairs):

We moved around a bit after that and I never settled on a long-time barber until we moved back to Florida. Right after we bought this house, I needed a haircut. Lynn went to buy some groceries and noticed a barbershop a short distance from the store. She stuck her head in the door of "Arnie's Barber Shop" and asked the price of a man's haircut. Arnie (who was manning the first chair) told her the price, she came home, told me where it was and told me to ask for Arnie. Arnie has been the only one to cut my hair for the last 25 years (except when I was in the hospital). BUT ... he just retired (in January) and sold his shop to one of his employees. I went in a few days before he retired and he cut my hair for the last time. I've had 3 haircuts since then ... by three different barbers. I'm sure I'll hook up with one I like and who knows, it may be the last barber I ever have. If he/she lasts as long as Arnie, I'll be 87 years old and I doubt I'll even have any hair left to cut ... IF I'm still alive.

Charlie Been's barber shop was the one I went to and was my favorite. We also had Chitwoods and Wimpy Webb's but Cahrlie's is where all the cool people went. Wimp's brother owned a car dealership in town. His name was Spyder. Seriously.

And it looks like Spider is out of the car bidness. He's actually dead. But his farm imlement bidness is doing fine. I bought a car from Spider once way back when. He was the town Mopar dealer.
