I read about that yesterday. Pretty dang cool. Seems like it was an early Nav system. Apparently it didn't have much in the way of under ship sonar and what not :)

incredible.. I've always been amazed at such things. On a different level; one thing I read (I believe in Jr. High) and never forgot. Lewis and Clark's final maps were accurate to 38 miles. 38 miles! and most was done by "dead reckoning" - which is ultimately an educated guess.
