Found this link that you might want to look at for some good tips on how to clean up old cast iron pieces. The electrolysis method looks like the one that requires the least elbow grease.

Yeppers, electrolysis is the way to go. I really should get more serious about my cleaning, but I'm lazy. I normally just wash 'em and oil 'em up, then leave the heavy work to the buyer. BTW, I read that site quite often. There's a world of information there.
