I'm toying with the idea of picking up an AR. Mostly, it would be for the heck of it. But, I'm thinking about having it double as a predator rifle. My limited research so far pulls up so many options it's almost too hard to know where to start. Any of you guys got thoughts on this or references I might find useful? All in, it needs to be less than $1k.

No. AR to me is the state I live in.

Sky and Cappy do, though.

Yo. Front and center.

I looked at just about everything and settled on a Rock River Predator. It served my purposes perfectly and it was unbelievably accurate and had a very nice Match Grade two-stage trigger. It will run you a little more than a grand though. I think they are around $1200.00 or so. You might be able to pick up used one in your price range.

That's a nice rifle. Did you get it in .223 or .308? Or, something else? What was you thinking?

I bought the .223. It's also chamber for the .223 Wild. Which basically means it will shoot military ammo as well. I wanted something super accurate that I could hunt coyotes with. If you want dual purpose with home defense being part of the picture you might want to look at something with a 18 to 20" barrel rather than the 24" barrel I had on my rifle. Their Coyote Rifle is a good one as well.

I bought a Colt HBar with the idea of having an AR that would be OK for both options.
It's very accurate but likes very specific ammo to do that.
I did a few little things to make it better, free floated the barrel, new spring kit for the trigger, left handed stock and an ambi safety
I did not want to end up with an AR that looked like a magnet in a junk yard.
I went with Colt because back then Colt was what defined AR guns, every new kid on the block would compare its self against Colt.
Today there are many AR's that can equal or even better themselfs against Colt,
If you look around you can find a nice HBar for your price range and find just about every piece of junk to add on it.

Sig came through my son, his dept. was looking to upgrade their AR's and Sig was a bidder. They offered the troops this model at a $400 discount. This was at the peak of the AR shortage. It took about a year for them to show up, by then the AR shortage had passed and there are many AR's out there at a much lower price.
I've even seen the exact model on sale for $1,100.
It's no great deal, just trying to get my money out of it.
You can go here to check it out.
