Took a pretty bad lighting strike last night, knocked the wifey and me out of bed. Lost a big old oak, about 100 feet from the house. I guess it can always be worst tho.

Mother needs firewood. When it's split, bring it by.

Seriously, glad you're ok. I got caught at the local dump when it hit, couldn't drive for 20 minutes.

Is that what water looks like on the ground?
Glad it didn't hit the house.

I've been in a meeting in Stuttgart today which is two hours south of me. They had .25 for the month of July, where I had 12 inches . I thought that was a lot, till I talked to a guy from SE Mo. who had 19 inches in July alone. Crazy ass weather !

I cannot imagine. Even Johnson grass is dried up and died here. I've never seen that happen.

I'm not familiar where that is exactly. I was on the UofA Experiment Station Southeast of town.

Dang. Not far!

Leave there and head to Almyra. Go past Almyra and stay left on Hwy 33. About 6 miles from 'Speriment Station. After 33/153 split, say on 33 for about 3 miles. There we are.

If your house runs off a well, be sure and tell your insurance company about the lighting strike, chance your well will go bad in the next 30 days.

Is that a fact?! (Not doubting you!) never knew that!
What for?!

I assume you mean the well will go dry, or you talking about the pump?

He's talking about the pump, their wiring is really sensitive to power surges and lightning .

Ok... For a second I was thinking close lightning strikes would dry up a well and I thought that was just cool as hell!

Lightning struck a big pecan in my front yard and stripped the bark off in a corkscrew strip about eight inches wide. Went up a long way up the tree. This tree is an old, old 60 footer that is probably four feet across. That was 16 years ago and it's still doing fine.

I'm not sure I understand and have never heard that either. Bubba, you say "the well will go bad" ... do you mean the well itself? Or the pump as NTB says? I mean, if they are so sensitive to power surges, why don't they go out immediately after the strike? Does the well pump go out gradually? I'm with Arty, I've never heard that before but I could maybe understand the pump being damaged but taking a while to quit completely. I think. (?)

House wells and submersible irrigation pumps are a lot alike. Both are expensive and both are sensitive to lightning strikes. With that being said, after a close powerful strike, it's probably a good idea to alert your insurance agent to the possibility of your misfortune . Don't make it harder than it needs to be thump .....

We had a big (VERY BIG) pine right at the NW corner of our house and (like you), about 15-16 years ago, lightning hit that thing. It stripped the bark down to the height of the house, then jumped from the tree to the attic. It zapped most everything electrical in the house and actually blew the nails out of the studs about an inch and they were protruding through the drywall in my office! I was hoping that tree would live, because it was a real monster (a third again as tall as my 2-story house!), but no such luck ... it didn't make it.

It'll take out the well pump, maybe over a few weeks after the damage.
Wife worked for State Farm and knew enough to record the lightning strike on the records so there was little question as to the reason the pump went out.
Our well is almost 300' deep so a new pump isn't cheap.
Other things to watch are most house hold appliances, over time they can also show damage due to electrical surges.

Lightning is amazing. The differences in potential are like 100,000 volts and the temperatures are up to four times hotter than the sun. Current values measuring in megaamps, which is just friggin unheard of.
Its no wonder stuff that is well grounded to the earth gets a jolt if its nearby.
Which is why you don't wanna be sitting in a boat with a graphite rod in your hand.

I see green ground covering, that brings back memories of years gone by. I see what I suppose is WATER (?) in a ditch. Seems like I remember water... I see green trees and one turning the color of all trees on the SC Farm.
