As far as I can remember, the US has never been a Democracy. There have been very few of those, I think ancient Greece is the only one that comes to mind readily.

We are a Republic.

Bucky is right both times.. As I understand it, Switzerland comes as close as any in modern times.

I think the point of the article is that we are an oligarchy. I don't know if that was ever not the case.. Maybe 100 years ago..

Voting turnouts plunged at the beginning ofvthe 20th century, to the extent that participation by voting influences how much an ogliarchy we really are. But even with what most people think of as a fair and democratic election process its really not. And Citizens United really put a period on thoughts of it being anytjing but ogliarchy.
