Syria has been a close ally to Russia (or Soviet Union) since the Assads came to power. Syria is just about the only Russian ally left in the Med.

Syria has also nearly been overthrown by ISIS, even after almost having the same result when the more moderate Sunni rebels previously. The Assad's have used the same Weapons of Mass Destruction that Posthole will tell you never existed against the rebels.

Until Assad's Syria either (A) prevails in this conflict or (B) is destroyed, they will enjoy Russian support. They also get Iranian support but that is usually in the form of Iranian proxies attacking the rebels.

When you look at the fleeing refugees on TV, none of them are fat . I like to see a group of that many from the U.S try to make a month long hike . It would be comical ........
