Ha ha ha! I wonder who here understands that? It was always "Uncle" when I was growing up. I first heard that term in Vicksburg!

I love Vicksburg....very unique and historical little town....we sneak off down there, occasionally, and hit the buffets at the casinos....especially, the Riverwalk Casino....best seafood buffet I've ever invaded. ;)

Ya' know sumpin'? I haven't been back to Vicksburg since I moved from there to Memphis in 1968. Lynn and I should really plan a trip up there sometime and stay a while. I've been THROUGH there on I-20 a dozen times since then, but never stopped. Heck, I have a couple of friends I wouldn't mind looking up anyway (according to Facebook, they're still there!). All the eating places I remember were joints us high school kids hung out at. Oh, the good ol' days. I LOVED being a kid in Vicksburg. The women were HOT! I remember we could (legally) buy beer at 18 in Mississippi, so of course we were buying it at 15-16. There was a drive-in burger joint right on the river (at the old bridge) where the car-hops would bring you beer. They figured if you were in a car, you were old enough to drink! Heck, I spent my whole time in Vicksburg driving on a Florida LEARNER'S PERMIT! To make it even crazier, I worked at the local Cadillac dealership picking up and delivering customer's Caddies! I even drove the old GMC dump truck we'd fill with scrap metal (mostly from the body shop) and take the scrap to recycle. I never had a "real" driver's license until we moved to Memphis.

Life was much simpler then. If the cops caught us with booze, they'd simply dump it out and tell us they didn't want to see us again that night. If we wanted hard stuff, the ONLY thing on the other side of the bridge was a little liquor store called Uncle PJ's. (you could buy liquor legally at 18 in La.) Heck, I can't even remember if that was the name of the store or not, but we all called him Uncle PJ. His main business was selling liquor to kids from Mississippi ... there was NOTHING else between Vicksburg and Meridian except PJ's at that time.

Ha ha ha! Yeah ... maybe we'll try to squeeze that in someday. Lynn's used all her vacation time (we're going to L.A. for 10 days in November) and since the new management took over, she lost 10 days of holiday time off ... so we're tight on vacation time these days. I definitely would like to make it back to my old stomping grounds though. I have a LOT of good memories from Vicksburg.

I don't know if you've ever been there or not Deppity, but there is a huge (Civil War) Military Park there. Dang, I did a LOT of parkin' & sparkin' in that park at night, but we always had to dodge the Rangers who'd cruise through there (it's closed at night). There was a big memorial that I'd park/hide behind and used it so much, the tracks looked like a road leading off the pavement to the back of the monument! ;)

"Hook Man's Bridge" was also in a VERY dark and desolate location in that park. Ol' Hook Man scared the panties off many gals I'd take to that bridge when I was in high school! :D

They have a huge Civil War cemetery there. Is your GGGGrandpa buried there by any chance?

I've already lowered his noticer status. Missing this one and the pheasant hens are pretty serious lapses.

I've never been there, and I'm not 100% sure where he his buried. There is a grave marker in a cemetery up here where he was from, but I don't know if the body is there or it's just a memorial stone. It's hard for me to imagine the body being sent back to NE Indiana from there in 1863, but maybe he was reinterred sometime later.

Both he and my Great-great grandfather were from a small town in Noble County Indiana, but for a reason that I haven't discovered, ended up enlisting in the 1st Illinois Light Artillery, Battery D. They saw action at Fort Donnelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. Then after Vicksburg they moved east with Sherman.

That's some cool stuff Deppity. I really know VERY little about either side of my family before my immediate grandparents. My cousin is supposedly working on a family tree, but who knows what that will tell?

Oh, before I forget, Cappy and P-hole both need to drag their stools out and USE them! ;)
