One of my co-workers brought me a big chunk of a Hen of the Woods mush room she found. Any of you jokers got a recipe?

I just eat 'em ... but I think Lynn usually sautes them like a normal mushroom. Oil, butter, salt and pepper I think. I've had it as an appetizer or as a side with steak. We buy them in the Asian market (the Japanese name is maitake). I've never had a wild one ... well, not that I know where the Asian markets get theirs, but I've never picked 'em out'ta the woods.

I'd have to think you can just slice 'em up and prepare them like any other mushroom. But what do I know?

Put them on a pine board, cover with butter, place in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes. Take them out and throw them away and eat the board. :D
You are welcome.

I CANNOT understand why some people will eat a mushroom without being forced to.

To paraphrase Helen from back in the day, y'all are a bunch of food Cossacks!

They're barbarians.

I was hoping you'd post a followup on how that turned out.

Man-o-man, some people! Mushrooms ... sauteed, soup, spaghetti, pizza, salad, gravy ... dang, the list is endless! Mushroom gravy is to die for!

Except for the mushrooms growing between Captain's green, poop stained toes.

I didn't eat it last night as I had had a root vegetable stew going in the crockpot. I'm thinking tonight I'll sauté it up with some garlic, EVO, deglaze the pan with a little white wine and toss it in with some pasta and parmesan cheese.

What time will dinner be served CD? Will you pick me up at the airport? ;)

I don't mind the taste of mushrooms. They taste like whatever you cook them with. It's a consistency thing with me, just grosses me out for some reason.

I'm not sure how Lynn cooks them persactly, but occasionally she'll buy a nice portobello and cook it up where you just slice it and eat it like a steak! Actually, I usually have it WITH steak, but you could actually make a meal of the dang things. What's that word? Larrupin?

Consistency? In the way they're cooked?? Or do you mean texture?

texture. Rubber dirt.

texture. Rubber dirt.

It shouldn't be like rubber unless it's cooked incorrectly. Like calamari or even lobster for example ... over cook it and it becomes "rubber".

Strangely enough... I've never eaten them - but a few are found around here.. My sis and BIL were given some a few weeks ago.. They weren't too impressed with the flavor and the texture ( they said) was "rubbery".

HEY! Maybe that's why you "unwashed" all like boiled peanuts. :biggrin

I'll have to get my hands on some.. I can make most anything from the timber edible. ;)

Bunch of culinary philistines. Hard to ruin a good mushroom no matter how you prepare it

Yep, that's one thing I miss about my annual trips up to Ohio. I used to love hunting (AND eating) those morels.
