Can anyone explain to me this system? :huh

If winning races earlier in the season doesn't matter, then why have so many of them?

Consider this: If Joey Logano fails to win next weekend’s race at Phoenix International Raceway, it will mean that the top three winners this season will not be racing for a championship Nov. 22 in Miami. Those three drivers have combined to win 16 of 34 races.

Matt Kenseth (five victories) and Jimmie Johnson (five victories, including Sunday’s race at Texas) already have been eliminated from title contention. Logano (six victories) faces that specter. His only chance to advance is winning after a tire issue ruined his race 10 laps into Sunday’s race.

I assure you I cannot. Maybe Posty or Thumper or MRNuke if he's around.

I won't pretend to understand it. But its a playoff system of sorts. Think of it like the All Star races where you compete for transfer slots in order to make it to the next round. It was put in to produce drama. I reckon it has. The more NASCAR meddles though, IMO, the lees I like it.

Thump will explain it when he checks in. Of course you may need to take a nap from the time you start reading it till the time you get done, but he will explain it... :D

One more reason why I like Indycar better. They don't have any gimmicks in their point system or a "chase" and their championship comes down to the last race every year. Several times in fact down to the last lap of the last race, and this year, it came down to the last turn on the last lap of the last race before it was determined who would win.

Scott Dixon won the championship and if Juan Montoya would have finished 1 position better, he would have ran. He was right on the tail of the car in front of him, but could not get past him. The points difference in that one position determined the championship.

But you don't have Danica.

You have 'Jean Girard'.

We already had Danica. NASCAR is getting the sloppy seconds.

Do you think she'd still have a Cup ride if she looked like Janet Guthrie?

You mean you're not entertained? That's why NASCAR keeps changing it up. The vocal minority ruin it for everyone else. Is there a perfect system? Based on the old points before the chase, we'd be leading bevis by 17 points!

I hear their reasons for the changes, but I look at it like if a guy locks up the championship with a few races yet to go, it just means he had a great year, but I guess they think no one will watch the races if it's already decided. I don't see the reason to ignore or to diminish the importance of the first 26 races by throwing out the points and starting over. Seems like the first 2/3 of the season in actually the "pre-season".

In 2003 Matt Kenseth was crowned the Winston Cup champion, despite winning only one race in the season.

Old point system.

What's wrong with that? That just means that he was consistently at the front even if he didn't win. How would the standings look this year under the old system?

They want the drama, and drama makes ratings. Like you said if someone was amazingly dominant and locked it up with 5 to go, no one would care to watch. Now seeing bevis and butthead have to race like hell this weekend will drive people to watch!
