Kinda cool, but I don't know why he makes his construction technique sound like a big secret, it couldn't be more basic. BUT ... I'm not sure I get the point. You'd really need to do some machine work on that pipe. Why not just grab a beat up old single shot 12 Ga. at the local pawn shop for 30 bucks? Heck, you could even aim it then. ;)

Because he's an old curmudgeon, Airbud. Thought you'd have noticed that by now.

It looks like the (pipe) is actually a barrel off a 12ga. shotgun. It would be hard to find a pipe that a 12 ga. shell fits in with the rim supported .
Also, I'm not sure a normal pipe would withstand the pressure generated by a 12 ga. Some 12ga. loads go beyond 10,000 psi.
So find an old barrel off a 12ga. single shot, find a pipe that fits over it, cap one end of the pipe and insert a screw for the fining pin, and bamm, you got what he has.
We use to tape a 12ga. shell to the end of our BB guns and fire them off.

I'm so glad I did not know about the shotgun shell taped to the BB gun when I was a kid....

No kidding! The closest we came was putting .22 shorts in my Dad's vice and hitting them with a nail and a hammer.

Back in the Old country we use to find guys in the woods with such guns, not the same, .410 ga. They will mount the rear pipe in a 2x4 carved as short stock. They used it for hunting dove and pigeons. Laws in PR for guns and hunting laws are way more strick so there were many reason to not get the guns in the regular way plus it was a disposable gun for them. IF they heard, saw or suspected anything they would ditch the gun and there is no way to track it to them.

I've been wanting a 410 for a long time to mess with. Really, what
i want is a Contender I can pack along in a tackle box.

You need a Judge in the tackle box.

i need to go shoot one. the barrel just doesn't look long enough to have any kind of accuracy.

I have a mossbert 500 in .410. I brought that one from PR, I used it on doves when we were hunting fields. Loved it.

I'd wanted a .410 for many years when I finally got serious about buying one. I really didn't NEED it, I'd just never owned one and WANTED one. That is, until I priced ammo. I'm sure things have changed, as this was many years ago and I haven't checked since, but DAMN! At that particular time, .410 shells were at least twice the price of 12 ga. shells, so I gave it some thought and backed away from buying one. My priorities in life changed drastically a few years back and I've sold off 99.9% of my guns, but the .410 is probably the only thing I'd wanted to own, but never did.

I hear ya. Its not as if I'd be plinking with it much. I'm starting to warm up to Captain's recommendation. Time to check the local pawn shops!

Well, I was until I looked up prices. I ain't spending 500 bucks on a tacklebox snake gun.

Posty I got a couple of the Judges, one that will only shoot the 2.5 and one that will shoot the 3" shells
You are like me in that you are still hung up in the 1970's prices. Anything gun/ammo related is high as hell now.
I also have one of these and it's a neat side by side 410 and a great little tackle box gun.

Back when I had beagles I had an 870 in .410.. Buddy had an 1100. We used to take them dove hunting a couple times a year. It'll make you bear down. ;)

I know somebody thats still dove hunts with a 410 and he does very well with it. Better than I'd ever expect to. Of course its too hot and there's too many skeeters here to move around much so I don't hunt 'em any more. Plus they taste like poo.

Captain, the sticker shock is foreboding! The other maybe cheaper alternative would be to see if I can find an old 410 long gun at a pawn shop and fashion myself a pistol grip and shorten everything up enough to make it manageable. I'd need to make a scabbard for it too. 410s used to be fairly common at pawn stores.

unfortunately you can't "legally" cut the barrel shorter than 18"..

BarryBobPosthole

I think I could make it manageable with an 18" barrel. I'm really not looking for something concealable, just portable.

Rossi made one called the "Snake Charmer" that would be easily converted.. last one I saw was hanging on the wall of a halibut boat in Ak

Barry, I'm ashamed to say that over the years I've done several nice Savage, Stevens 410's just as you propose. Keep in mind the barrel cannot be any shorter than 18" and the overall length cannot be any shorter than 26" if you saw the stock off.
Your issue is not going to be cutting one down its gonna be FINDING one to cut down. They are high even the single shot and double barrels. The pistol I posted above is as cheap and fix as you are going to find.

A few years ago I found a really nice Savage 311A SXS in 410.
I'm saving that for my grand kids.
Fun to shoot, but as mentioned I can just about buy 3 boxes of 12ga for the same as a box of 410
