I grew up in a time when if you wanted a well paying job after HS you went to work for the Big 3. They gave you a good job for a good middle class living.
Look at how they build them now.

When I was driving my truck, I was amazed by how many warehouses I loaded at that had hardly anybody there. A few management personnel, a few supervisors and a some fork lift drivers who only drove about 10 feet inside the warehouse. They'd move farther from the rear of the trailer to the front than they moved within the warehouse itself. The order would go in, the robots would run through the plant, grab whatever was on the order, take it to the loading dock, set it down at the back of the trailer and head back into the plant. The forklift drivers would simply pick up the pallets and stick them into the trailers. The first plant I visited like that was a Budweiser plant. I bumped the dock and went inside for my paperwork. The place was eerily quiet and I could see no humans! I finally followed the signs up a flight of stairs to some offices where I picked up my paperwork, then I stood outside the office on an elevated walkway with a birds-eye view of the whole plant. NO people! The robots would bring the pallets to the back of my trailer, the forklift driver would shove it into the trailer and I was loaded! They just built a HUGE Amazon warehouse here in our little town and it is fully automated ... just a handful of humans here and there.
