At EVERY estate sale I go to ... ok, maybe 98% of them ... there is usually a china cabinet displaying a set of fine china. If not in a china cabinet, it will be on an out of reach, high shelf in a kitchen cabinet or even boxed up in a closet someplace. I remember while growing up, my mom had a set that was a wedding gift, in fact, she STILL has it. To my knowledge it has never once been used, although after surviving the raising of 6 kids and countless large dogs running around the house (we had Collies, German Shepherds and a few large mutts as kids), not to mention elebenty-bazillion moves from one side of the country to the next, the old china set has suffered a few chips here and there.

I guess my question is, does ANYONE actually USE that stuff anymore? I remember my grandparents using china for the large family meals at times, but there was always the FINE china hidden away that never got used. Is that sort of stuff ever gonna go the way of the Dodo Bird? Do people still give that stuff as wedding gifts?

When I was a kid, my Mom would get out the "good stuff" for our guests....a complete set of orange-colored corelle dishes. ;)

We eat off of Corelle now. Believe it or not, I sell a TON of it on eBay. I went to one "hoarder" sale and she had a garage full of 80's Corelle still in the unopened cases. I bought something like 50-60 cases (generally 6 to a case) for $1/case! I came home with a truck load. That stuff sold as fast as I could list it! I think I listed all of it at $27.50/case and easily made around $1500 or more with that $50 investment! I wish I had a boat load of that stuff. Mind you, it was new, still in the case. The individual used stuff doesn't sell as well, except for the larger bowls and platters, etc. The basic (used) dishes don't bring much, but do sell as people replace broken/lost pieces etc.

We eat off of trenchers made of bread.

I have my Moms wedgewood she ordered when we went to England when I was 8 years old. Do you know of any places where I could find the value of it? I have absolutely no use for it and none of my kids have any interest in it.
