Our little community decided to install this 20 foot lighted cross on a cell tower, adjacent to the main highway 82, where it could be seen by those who travel thru our community.
We got approval from the company that owns the tower, and raised the funds in just two weeks.

Community stuff is awesome. My family supported, and was supported by the same little community for my entire life. More people have moved to the country and so the community has changed there, but its still close and they watch out for one another.

Nice job!

Dang Muddy, yours actually looks more like a radio tower that probably leases a portion to a cell phone company, but maybe you could start a drive to REALLY help the community. Down here, we have quite a few cell towers that are "disguised". The difference is, (using your cross as an example), the cell company will PAY for the disguise themselves if the issue is approached correctly. Of course I don't know the ins & outs, but it may be something to look into. We have a cell tower here in town that is on a public school property. It's a giant flag pole. The cell company not only pays the school system rent for the area used, but they paid for the disguise.

There are two churches in the area (that I know of ... there are probably more) that not only collect rent, but the cell company also paid for the disguise. I'll admit, the cross is HUGE ... but the pastor says what's cool about it is that it can be seen from all over town. The other is a very nice and FUNCTIONAL bell tower.

We have a State Forest just north of me that has cell towers disguised as trees. Depending on the area, some are even palm trees. Heck, they even have giant cactus in Arizona!

HA, we ain't that sophisticated, Thump....yet. ;)

A simple cross sends a mighty powerful message.

Back in the 80's when we were building our fiber network at WilTel, we had a digital microwave system that ran from Salt Lake to Portland. Microwave towers are somewhat bigger than cell towers. And we had them every thirty miles right through spotted owl country. So the company went to quite a bot of expense to make the microwave towers more natural. They kind of ended up looking like fire towers. And they did a good job keeping the buildings and grounds they were on as natural as possible.
I never got to drive that route but always wanted to. I drove almost every mile of Wiltel's original fiber coast to coast network. But the techs on that microwave shot got to drive sno-cats and shit. I always thought that would be an awesome job if you were single and an outdoor person. But we worked those poor guys to death.

Whoever the hockey puck is that took the picture missed the fact that composing it a little differently would have the cross reflection off the water as well. Dufuseses.

My buddy's(catfish farmer) wife took that pic, spontaneously, right after it's installation, and right before dark from their porch....she's hardly a picture expert, but the reflection woulda been a nice touch.

Sorry... Didn't mean to detract from your point. I'm not Thumper for fucks sake!

It is a cool community. We don't get much pulling together like that round my parts.
