Having photographed many long distance running events I can tell you that nip guards are real and very much required equipment for anything over 10 miles.

I used to have the same problem as a kid riding the surf on those rental float thingies. Tender nips, canvas and salt are a painful combination. I can totally understand the need.

And you are correct about the salt part. When it's 90+ outside and you get to sweating ... And I mean I sweat a LOT... The salt in the sweat makes them nips burn!
I'm such a tender little fella... I needs protection.

I've just been WAITING to provide my own proof to this...and although my buddy is probably in pain and won't wear a shirt without putting bandaids on for the next several days, I am somewhat happy that he FORGOT HIS NIP GAIRDS TODAY!!

This is my buddy who ran the Virginia 10 miler this morning. Like I said, he forgot his Nip Guards.
