Well here I sit
It up at 4:30 and drove out to the coast. Got in my bear stand about 1:15. Just had the first sighting of a bear just after 3:00. Looked like about a 250 pounder. I let him/her cross. I scoped it and could see a lot of "ear" so I figured it was just too small to shoot. That and the fact it was just over 500 yards away.
In the picture the stand you can see is 500 yards from me. He crossed just beyond that stand. If he had been more round headed and no ear showing I'd give him a barrel...
Best time is suppose to be right before dark. We will see...

Dang! I will say I miss bear hunting. I always hunted from a ground blind and would get up close and personal with them. Makes it a bazillion times more exciting! ;)
Knock down a big ol' bruin for me so I can live vicariously through you!
-
Not bad. Seen Four in as many hours. Only one close to being a shooter and he was a bit far... Maybe tomorrow?
-
Dang that sounds like a ton of fun, Cap'n!
I never thought much about bear hunting until we were talking about it at your place.
I had NO idea they were supposed to be so tasty.

Headed out to give it another try...
-
Good luck, buddy. Perhaps this morning will be the time ol' Yogi screws up.

I tell you what is a weird feeling and that's to be sitting in the stand and have a large bear so close you can hear him breathing/huffing and cannot see him cause it's still dark. Happened to me just a few minutes ago. I finally saw what looked like a black Volkswagen cross the canal ditch and run into the trees. Just sorta a big black shadow.
Come on daylight!

That reminds me of a story my cousin told me. He lives down in SW Arkansas on the original family homestead. He was losing calves pretty seriously a few years ago and thought for sure he had a mountain lion loose down there. So he took one of the carcasses and chained it to a tree and then got up in a climbing tree stand and watched it all night. I guess sometime during the night one of the bears that had been raiding his calves came back and started in on that carcass he had chained up below him. That was when he figured out his light had stopped working. He said it took a long long time for that sun to come up. He finally got the game and fish folks involved and come to find out there was a lady that lived across the river that was feeding bears and had about thirteen of them coming around her place. The Game and Fish folks had to trap them and relocate them at a pretty big expense. He said he lost about ten calves that year to bears. He has no love lost for them and if one sets foot on his farm it's toast.

Not yet. One just crossed the road about 300 yards up but he was carrying the mail! Didn't even give me time to pick up the rifle.

Day two...
That is the stand I was hunting yesterday and saw 4 bears in the road here where I'm sitting now. They will probably all cross at the stand I was in yesterday since I moved today

I can see why they were here yesterday. There is a big corn food plot right in front of this stand
Attachment 3956
They literally have the bank of the canal ditch wore out from crossing just about 50 years from here.

But the bad news is the cold front has moved in and it's pouring rain! :-(
