    Fishing question

Since we do not have a fishing forum.

What’s your thoughts on a fish that “swallows the hook”.

I always (well mostly) will snip the line close to its mouth and throw it back in. I’ve always heard a fish will eventually either digest, or spit the hook.

    What say you?

I forgot to ask the most important question.
    Does the fish live?

They don't seem to swim or breathe too well in hot peanut oil.

I give them the bruton spa treatment, which is a cornmeal poultice and a hot oil bath.

I have caught a number of fish with hooks in various states of deterioration.. I think many live.

If you don't put them back there is a 100% chance they won't live...

    Good point Sky

My son caught a red ear yesterday. Went a pound and half. She had swallowed the little #6 hook very deep, so we just cut the line right at her lip and put her back. I hope she makes it. She’ll be a hog next year. Heck, a pound and half is a hog now in my book!

+1. Just like letting little bucks walk. Keep whatever fish you want and shoot whatever deer you like. Just don’t use what “might” happen as the reason for it.

Set the damn hook at the correct time would be my advice.

Easier said than done with a redear. Them buggers have a tendency come up underneath the bait and swallow it all way up to the splitshot. You don't even know he's there until your cork is laying on it's side. At that point, I just wrap the line around my hand and snatch his gizzard out and chunk him in the cooler

Fish is too low on the food chain for that. I defer to the Bruton spa treatment

Use barbless hooks (or pinch the barb down). Makes it way easier to release a fish, even one that's deep hooked.

    QA, Thanks.

    Len, bite me.

    C) I normally do not care. This Particular fish is one I’d love one of us to catch again. We don’t come across 1 1/2 pound redear all that often.

One that size would almost feed two people. If you had lots of fries and fish gravy

My old buddy, Mick Thill, (long story) would tell you.. (insert British accent) "That's what comes from improper weighting of your float." I've fished with him. I wouldn't argue with this guy about "floats" .. Kevin Van Dam is well known name in the U.S. - Mick Thill is the best known fisherman in the *world*..

Bah, them English don't know nothing about fishing. " I say old chap, should I go with a hand tied Caddis or a Royal Coachman?"

"Tut tut, in this light, I'd have to say a Hares Ear or a Wooly Bugger."

Screw the Brits... they sit in a dug out mudhole fishing for carp with cane poles and it's actually a televised sport. You can't trust a man that does that. It's weird I tell ya, weird!

Johnboy has the best idea. You don’t miss all that many hooksets with a barbless hook. Not when you has skillz.

lol.. Mick (who I'm sure you've heard of) is a character (he was born in Chicago, where I met him).. but the real hand full is Nigel Griffin (who I'm sure you haven't) .. He's the Brit who came to the US 30 years ago, to revolutionize (and bring into the 20th Century ) carp fishing here. When the phone rang and it was Nigel.. I just banked on doing nothing but listening for the next hour.
