Man that sucks. With all that scaffolding there, my first guess would be welding, cutting or possibly heating tar. But wtf do I know? The sucky part is, what's been destroyed is virtually irreplaceable.

I’m amazed that something as precious and has been around since 1300 wouldn’t have had better fire suppression. There are/were some priceless artand relics in there. The organ alone would have been worth whatever it took to prevent a fire.

"fire sprinkler system" ....we don't need that it might go off an ruin some artifact.
Not sure how easy it would be to retrofit a sprinkler system into a 800 year old building.

Heck, it's just water pipes and heat sensitive sprinkler heads. I've never really thought about it before, but if it were here in the states and open to the public, would sprinklers be required?

Man that is a grand old building and I was sad to see it in flames. I hope they can rebuild it again.... but I wonder what it would be used for? France ain't exactly filling the pews on sunday morning. Maybe it would be more of a historic/museum type building?

A few years ago #2, his wife and her dad attended Mass there. He said it was one of the most spectacular buildings he's ever seen.
Tonight the news said that over night, over 7 million has been donated for a rebuild, they expect well over 100 million to come in over the next week.

When my wife and I were in Paris a few years ago we went to Mass there as well. It was the most amazing church I had ever seen. Until we went to St. Peter’s in Rome.
I guess having been there made it really hit me when I saw the news on the fire. The video of the spire falling gave me a similar feeling to when the WTC came down on 9/11.
It’s hard to imagine that building was over 230 years old when Columbus came to America, and over 500 years old at the time of the Declaration of Independence. Hell, the “new bridge” in Paris was built in the 1500’s.
