A buddy of mine has gotten himself in a minor pickle. He used to be my next door neighbor for 10-years in California, but now lives in Idaho. He and his wife bought a new handgun and sent it to a Cerakote specialist in Spokane, Washington to be customized. (A guy named Brad) Now he's donating it for a September auction in New York City and the proceeds are being donated to LEO families who were victims of the 911 attacks. BUT ... he ran into a snag as he can't ship it to New York unless it is made inoperable and mounted in some sort of presentation case. (I may have the details a bit screwed up). Anyway, he's asking for suggestions. First, I said he could auction it locally and donate the cash, but I'm sure his audience would be a LOT smaller in Idaho. I told him (as far as I know) he could get a local FFL holder to ship it to another FFL dealer in NY. But, then getting it to the auction might be difficult. I then suggested contacting the COP in the borough where the auction is to be held and let him (or a designated LEO) handle the transport. In fact, once some eyes are laid on that thing around the station, there my be a ton of LEO's wanting to bid themselves.

TBH, I'm not all that familiar with New York gun laws and everything I've suggested might be worthless suggestions. (yeah, I also told him he should remove it from his underwear drawer before he takes the pics!)

I can’t help with NY. I know that in Indiana he could just go through an FFL and there would be no problem.

Yeppers, I agree, but they also need to get it to the auction. At that point, it really doesn't "belong" to anybody. I'm not sure how that works in NYC.

Does he currently own the gun? I would think theFFL there should be able to do the paperwork to transmit to the buyer at the auction.

In all of my experience with donated guns through DU and the gang investigators association I’m a board member of, we’ve always just had an FFL there to do the paperwork to give the gun to the winner.

If he’s made arrangements to donate the gun they should have an FFL set up to do any paperwork that could accept the gun.

Of course if you’re correct on not being able to ship an operable gun to NY, what I just said is worthless.

TBH, I'm a little bit clueless and his Facebook post leaves a LOT to be desired as far as clarity goes. I made the above suggestions to his page, but I can't help feel he's not understanding the whole process. Anyway, here's his (unedited) post if it adds any insight at all. (ya' kind'a have to wade through the grammar and punctuation issues)

That kind of clears it up some. Apparently they can’t auction off a gun so it could be donated (inoperable) for display.

Sounds like his best option would be to sell the thing himself and donate the proceeds. I would think he could get a decent amount for it from the right buyer.

And he doesn’t need to be a FFL holder. He just has to ship it to one.
I’ve sold 4 guns on gunbroker this year, it’s as seemless and secure as eBay.

That's good to know. Back when I was going through my mass sell-off, I considered using them, but had no problem moving my stuff without them. Personally, under the circumstances, I think it would be his best bet. I wonder if there's a way to contact them directly and inquire about possibly waiving the final value fees as part of the donation? (or not)
