A trip report, and how NOT to gut a deer

Youth weekend in Virginia was this weekend.
My 15 year old shot this 4 minutes before sunrise.
We ALWAYS meat hunt until we know we’ve got enough to last the year, and since we had 220 pounds of ground deer on January 1 this year, and I’m down to 5-6 packs, it’s time to fill the freezer. We have not bought ground meat at a grocery in forever...

Any who, 6:47 am. 200 yards. Dead right there. 165 grain hornady superformance in 30-06. Still in velvet!

Also, while gutting, I cut the flexor tendon in my thumb clean in half. Ended up in ER after we got the necessary shit done with the deer.
Calling a hand surgeon tomorrow. Dominant hand so I’m basically cripple.
Can you spot this buck in the pic? I’m zoomed in as far as my phone lets me. He was out there, and he could only see his back.

Also, anyone here cut a thumb tendon? How’s the recovery?

I forgot to say that Jackson ripped his shirt off and cut sleeve to make a tourniquet.
He tied it off for me and we got back to work.

Last night he said “I checked off two bucket list items. 1) killed a buck in velvet. 2) ripped my shirt off in the woods to make a tourniquet”

Yep, Arty, I sliced mine in two about 10 years ago.....I threw up my left hand to avoid getting my throat sliced by a piece of falling freshly cut galvanized metal roofing.....I called my doc on the way to the hospital, and he had a hand surgeon, waiting on me at the operating room.
It was on my non-dominant left hand, and the surgery was successful.....however, after it had nearly healed, I started over-using it too soon, and one day while unloading some metal pipe, I actually felt it tear loose.....I never went back to have it repaired, but actually it doesn't bother me too much.
Btw, tell the young'un congrats !!!

How long before you could drive, and shoot (remember this IS my dominant hand).
I know I’ll miss bow season now, but hope i can make muzzleloader

Since it was my left off-hand, I went back to driving in only about a week.....my accident happened, during the summer, so I was all healed up by deer season.
Can you use a crossbow in VA ???

As long as I’m ok to drive and shoot 4 weeks from surgery I’m ok with it.

They put me completely under.....doc said it was micro-surgery, and wanted me totally motionless......took about an hour.

I wouldn’t let that keep me from hunting with a crossbow.....just hunt with a buddy, and have him cock it for you, before you get on-stand,,,,,,you’ll have only one shot, but you prolly won’t need but one.

HA, in that case, maybe his buddy will need to sit in the blind with him, and cock his bow and hand him arrows.

You’ll need a bow hand AND a cock hand!

    Multi-tasking at its best!

Dominant hand so I’m basically a cripple.
That's why NORMAL people are right handed!

BTW, that old yellow Coke case thrown back there on those bicycles can bring $50 on eBay.

(sorry, I can't help myself sometimes)

I just picked these up last week. I have a little cleaning to do, but they're not bad. All bottles (none damaged) are period correct. $8.00 at an estate sale!

Yours looks like it may be the open (16-oz.) type, correct? Can't really tell from the pic.

If you turn a dog loose to hunt – you’d better to be ready to deal with what he trees.

So that was youth day hunting right Arty?
A time to teach young kids how to hunt and safety in the woods right??
Perhaps he could tell us what he learned?
