    It's been a year......

I didn't realize it until, today, but it's been almost exactly a year, since Sandy passed to the big timber in the sky.....I've done a ton of research this past year on hunting dogs of all breeds, and finally decided that I'm ready to train another hunting companion.
After all the research and talking with other owners, I decided on a female German Short-Hair.....they are quite intelligent, and can be trained or cross-trained to pursue various game animals, as well as retrieve.
So, I put a down payment on the pick of the litter for a female, which was born last Wednesday.....there are only a few breeders here in MS, and this one is very honest and has five star facilities.....I'll pick her up in 8 weeks.
Here's a picture of the sire:

As Postie said, those long-legged buggers can go all day long. You'll be running marathons in no time Muddy.

They are definitely good looking critters, enjoy!

Speaking of hard heads, we rescued two husky pups back this summer. They are six months now and like a pack of hyenas. I’ve never seen smarter dogs. They open doors by turning the knob. Yesterday I had to lock a back gate because they figured out how to work the latch and got out. That was fun, chasing down pups on a frosty morning.

This was at about three months I think. My wife and I are kind of like Thumper is about cats. There’s no way we would have taken only one of these two surviving littermates (they were abandonded). But good lord, two puppies are a pain in the ass.

Dropped his forlorn ass off at the vet at 7:00 this morning and I’ll pick him up around 5:00 this afternoon. Huskies on morphine aren’t too much fun. His sis is moping around here like she lost her best buddy.

I imagine Huskies with their nuts cut off aren't too much fun, either.

You'll love the GSP, especially if you put some early work into her. I think you made the right choice with a female, mine was a male and a huge PITA when he wasn't hunting. I moved from Oklahoma to Seattle and mine:

    1. Chewed through the wooden fence and got out. Mind you I lived in Microsoft corporate housing at the time. I gave them a call and they fixed it for free! Yay, me...or so I thought

    2. They (corporate) was a bit less forgiving when I called to say that he had chewed all the siding off the back of the house 4 foot up. They did come fix it but it cost me $1200.

    3. I lost my mind for the third and put him in the mud room. I came home and he had chewed/clawed through the sheet rock on both sides and his head was sticking through into the garage when i opened it.

With that said that dog in a milo field could come to a dead stop, while running 40 miles an hours, swirl and point a pheasant that was 20 yard away. Over the years I became much more of a dog watcher than an actual hunter. I still enjoyed upland hunting but watching him work was amazing.

One thing I use to do is tie a quail wing to a fishing pole when he was a pup and bounce it. I wish I still had the video but he would point at 12 weeks old.

You forgot the story of your neighbors awaking in the wee hours to Jaeger slurping water out of their toilet.

You'll have a great time, as I know you know. Barry's right I did forget one other story. Jaeger (that was my GSP) had a habit of chewing through fences. Really didn't matter whether it was wood or chain link. Anyway, one night around 2AM he chewed through the chain link that separate me from the neighbors yard. After roaming around in the yard he decided it would be good to use their doggy door and go inside. They had small dogs, which is important later.

At least the way my neighbor told me he is awoken at 2am to somebody in his house. He can hear someone rustling through stuff in the bathroom. So, he goes and gets a bat because he didn't own a gun (we weren't friends), and proceeds to open the door. Jaeger's in there drinking out of the toilet, and both parties were startled. Jaeger takes off and runs through the house, headed the same way he came in. Like I said the neighbors had small dogs. I'm not really sure how Jaeger, who was a good sized GSP at I'd say 80lbs, got in through the small door in the first place; however, going out he didn't take his time and ran straight through.

The neighbor called me and said Jaeger was just in my house. I open my door and there he sits on the back porch with the neighbord's doggie door around his head/shoulder. He must of hit it at top speed and just took the frame of it with him. That one cost me money too.
