    I didn’t say anything about a conspiracy.
    I said it’s interesting.

This coming from the guy who said the Trump put Pence in charge of the response so he could replace him. That kinda sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.

Yeah, we just got news that spring break has been extended to two weeks starting next week.... and that we have to transition to "digital format" after that. Except that I don't know what in particular that means. Online lectures? Just assigning and taking up homework online? Both neither? Something else entirely?

Needless to say we're in a bit of a snit here figuring out what is what.

I belong to a "chat group" (like GoodHunting) in Thailand and a doctor in the group posted this a couple days ago. It's food for thought. (sorry, I guess you could call this a "Thump post")

I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis, TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, open-mindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.

I dunno Jimbo. I hate to see all of those things that people and governments and companies and teams are doing too. But I also think your doctor friend is sticking his head in the sand a bit. Or maybe its the same false bravado we see some public figures displaying?

The numbers of older people that it could (and I said ‘could’ not ‘would’) kill are staggering. Are we willing to risk that so we can have big weddings? Baseball season, basketball season? What message will we be sending our kids when grandma and grandpa are gone and werefused to change the way we do things and went to those soccer games?

I don’t like over-reaction either and I get the message he’s saying. I’ll just say I don’t know. There seems to be no real voice of authority in America that is telling us enough facts to know what really is the logical and effective thing to do. And IMO, its that uncertainty that’s why the stock market is doing what its doing and is why we’re startingto see overreactions right and left.

I think the biggest concern to me is all of the conflicting messages we are getting on it. The cancellations of large events world wide, the travel bans, hell, Italy has basically quarantined the entire country in their homes. Then on the other side it’s don’t panic and just wash your hands.

The solution is somewhere in the middle but the uncertainty is what is unnerving to everyone.

Well if it makes anyone feel better, most every government has mishandled this thing. We aren't unique... except in that we have a health system that is geared to make this type of situation worse than it needs to me. No one in power wants to looks weak or scared. They will not be ahead of the curve. The personal risk is too high if they turn out wrong. What we are doing now should have been done a month ago. Steps that should be taken now won't be. Not until public opinion allows it.

The mortality rate is still very much in the air. We know for a fact, now that the numbers aren't coming from China, that the death rate is substantially above that which the Chinese reported. The rate for Italy and Iran are VERY much higher. That will come down after the fact as they can get a good model on how many got it but displayed no symptoms. For now, if you have symptoms this thing is very serious.

Treatment will get better as time goes by. But that won't help in the next month or so while this thing descends on us.

Quid pro joe just gave a speech in some state and he said almost verbatim what trump said last night, except he kept saying “unlike trump, I will do x,y,z”.
But it was 1 billion percent the same thing trump said last night. Just in an uncle joe twist.

He then said “we need to knock out this bird flu and I’m the man to do it!”

    Kidding on the last part...

This social distancing deal carries more weight than I think we’re giving it credit for.

    All true Posty.

AND it helps to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. When that happens people die needlessly.

That really is the best argument for just shutting everything down for a couple of weeks. Overall illness won’t be change that much, but spreading it will allow our healthcare system to better deal with it.

And that flu peaked at 250 deaths per 100,000 based on that chart.

And just like that.... I believe I have contracted it. And given it to my lovely wife. I was careful. Just to work and back. Couple trips to the store. Would get tested but I'm not sure southern WV even has tests yet.

Being a professor just doesn't lend itself to isolating yourself.

Anyway we're set up ok. And it isn't as bad as the stuff I had in January yet. And I've my fingers crossed that it won't get that way. Hell my lungs sounded like an acordian every time I let out a breath.

I was wondering when it was going to affect one of us here. Good luck with it Willie and try to keep us informed. You're young and strong, so I'd imagine it'll just be a temporary setback. Wishing you and the wife a speedy recovery.

I worry about the same scenario here. Although business is WAY down, I worry about Lynn working at the hotel. There are nothing but traveling visitors in and out of there. It doesn't seem like a good situation, but what can you do? If she gets it, I get it ... simple as that. I'm pushing 70 and already have enough health issues to deal with.

    Best of luck Will!

Good friend of mine was renting a place in Spain.. Sounds like he had a hell of a time getting out and they are in a self-imposed two week quarantine.. He has a beautiful place in the country a few miles from me. His neighbors are already plotting to place some kind of humorous "Quarantine" sign in his yard. I thought I'd buy a good bottle of bourbon, pull up to his house, set it in the driveway - honk and drive away..

    Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I did stock up on Mucinex so we have decent flu medicine. If you can get it and Delsym it really helps with coughing and chest congestion.

This morning I tried an experiment to see if habanero sauce on eggs kills flu virus.

At least the power came back on. It went out at bedtime last night and didn't come back on till an hour ago. That would have made things more difficult. Maybe our luck is getting better.

    So, here’s a poser.

Companies are racing to develop a vaccine and the FDA is providing expedited processes to help it along. What the odds the companieswho get a product ready get exclusive patents on the vaccine?

    And, should they?

They probably will but unless they can mass produce and distribute in a matter of weeks they shouldn’t.

The CDC holds a lot of patents on flu vaccines and bring in mucho denero with licensing fees.

I’m not sure how this one will work since its being developed by drug companies. Although much was provided for free, such as the dna sequence.

And who gets sued 10 years from now when it's discovered the vaccine makes some people grow a third eyeball?

Well I'll give a quick update on this end.

From first symptom to now is 5 days. And although it got bad on Saturday it didn't hit me nearly as hard as the flu in January did. I think I'm getting over it and have my fingers crossed.

My wife otoh is getting hit pretty hard by it. Fever, vomiting, persistent cough, extreme congestion, achy all over. The whole works. Its bad but I've got my eye on her and we're in touch with the doctors in case I need to run her in for care.

    Will

PS: I forgot to pick up taters at the store... Now there ain't a spare spud in a hundred miles of here. :o

Wishing you and especially your wife the best Willie.

Lynn and I were out doing a bit of shopping this weekend (food). The produce isles looked like they'd been attacked by a heard of buffalo. All three stores we went to were sold out of toilet paper and supplies such as Lysol, hand sanitizer, etc. This morning, I had to drop a package off at our local Walgreens and there were notices on the doors that they were sold out of TP, as well as a long list of other irems like rubber gloves, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, etc. etc. From there, I went to the Post Office and noticed the parking lot was practically empty .... waaaay different than any other Monday I've ever seen. BUT ... when I got to the door, the line was backed up all the way to the entrance! I thought, WTF? Where are all these people parked? Once I was able to enter the door, I realized there were very few people in line, but they were all standing 6-8 feet apart ... hence the backup to the door. On top of that, half the people in there were wearing face masks. The lady (customer) at the counter next to me was wearing a face mask AND plastic gloves. She paid her postage with cash and when the clerk handed her back her change (ONE NICKEL), she told the clerk to keep it because he's not wearing gloves, so she doesn't want it, then she walked out.

Ok, think about that last one folks. She was wearing gloves and had handed him money from her purse, but refused the "dirty" change! I looked at the clerk, he looked at me with a puzzled look and asked, "Did that make any sense?" I busted out laughing and said, "Not one bit!"

Caution is fine, but this whole thing is making some people stupid!
